Noninvasive Biomarker

A noninvasive biomarker is a measurable biological indicator obtained without surgery or tissue biopsy, offering information about normal physiology, disease, or treatment response while reducing patient burden. These markers are detected in accessible samples or signals, such as blood, urine, breath, imaging data, or physiological measurements, and are interpreted through their association with underlying molecular or cellular changes. In medicine, noninvasive biomarkers support screening, diagnosis, prognosis, disease monitoring, and personalized treatment decisions. Their clinical value depends on analytical accuracy, biological relevance, and validation in appropriate patient populations, helping researchers develop safer and more practical approaches to health assessment.

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...

2012

We describe a rat model of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that reveals the persistent alterations in neuroendocrine function and the delayed long-term, exaggerated fear response, characteristic of PTSD patients. The animal model and methods described here are useful for correlating biomarkers in brain nuclei, which are mechanistic but cannot be measured in patients, with biomarkers in peripheral white blood cells, which can.

2016

High Frequency Oscillations (HFOs) have emerged as presurgical biomarkers for the identification of the epileptogenic zone in pediatric patients with medically refractory epilepsy. A methodology for the noninvasive recording, detection, and localization of HFOs with simultaneous scalp electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) is presented.

(2019)This video demonstrates a non-invasive ophthalmic drug delivery method for targeted neuromodulation. The drug is delivered via eye drops, absorbed into the circulation, crosses the blood-brain barrier, and activates specific neuronal receptors.

An Overview of bGDGT Biomarker Analysis for Paleoclimatology

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst Throughout this series of videos, natural samples were extracted and purified in search of organic compounds, called biomarkers, that can relate information on climates and environments of the past. One of the samples analyzed was sediment. Sediments accumulate over geologic time in basins, depressions in the Earth into which sediment flows through the action of fluid (water or air), movement, and gravity. Two main types...
