Primary Tumor Resection

Primary tumor resection is a surgical procedure that removes the main tumor from its original site, often with a margin of surrounding tissue, to reduce tumor burden and obtain tissue for definitive diagnosis. Surgeons use imaging, operative findings, and anatomical landmarks to identify and excise the lesion while preserving critical structures; the specimen is then examined by pathology to assess tumor type, margins, and other features. Resection can provide local disease control, relieve symptoms, and support staging and treatment planning. Depending on tumor biology and surgical findings, it may be combined with lymph-node evaluation, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy.

Source: Alomari, S., et al. Implementation of Minimally Invasive Brain Tumor Resection in Rodents for High Viability Tissue Collection. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)This video demonstrates the use of a minimally invasive resection system (MIRS) to excise tumor tissue from an anesthetized mouse implanted with a tumor. The procedure involves securing the mouse onto a stereotactic frame, reopening the previous surgical site to access the brain, and inserting a specialized cannula that utilizes suction and a...
