Self-care Ability

Self-care ability is a person’s capacity to perform activities that maintain health, manage illness, and support independence, making it an important concept in medicine and nursing. It depends on the coordinated function of physical, cognitive, sensory, and emotional systems, which enable tasks such as eating, bathing, dressing, taking medicines, and recognizing when to seek help. Clinicians assess self-care ability through patient history, observation, and activities-of-daily-living measures to identify limitations, guide rehabilitation, tailor education, and arrange appropriate support. Monitoring changes over time can also reveal functional decline and inform care planning.
