Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion

Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is a spinal surgery that removes a damaged lumbar disc and fuses adjacent vertebrae to restore stability and relieve nerve compression. Through a posterior, transforaminal approach, the surgeon accesses the disc space, prepares the vertebral endplates, places a bone-filled interbody cage, and secures the motion segment with pedicle screws and rods; bone growth across the space eventually creates a solid fusion. TLIF is used to treat selected conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, and spinal stenosis when nonoperative care is insufficient. Understanding its biomechanics, indications, and healing process supports surgical planning, patient counseling, and evaluation of outcomes.
