Equine Recurrent Laryngeal Neuropathy

Equine recurrent laryngeal neuropathy is a peripheral nerve disorder in horses in which dysfunction of the recurrent laryngeal nerve weakens or paralyzes the intrinsic muscles that abduct the arytenoid cartilage, most often on the left side. During exercise, impaired arytenoid movement narrows the laryngeal airway, increasing respiratory resistance and producing abnormal inspiratory noise, reduced performance, or exercise intolerance. Veterinary evaluation combines history, airway endoscopy at rest and, when needed, during exercise with functional grading of laryngeal motion. Understanding this condition supports diagnosis, performance assessment, and selection of management or surgical procedures intended to improve airway function in affected horses.

This paper describes a method of abdominal wall closure using tension and apposition sutures in horses undergoing ventral midline laparotomies. It also describes methods for prevention and management of postoperative incisional complications, such as bandaging, negative pressure therapy, and in case of wound breakdown, the application of retention sutures.
