Tumor Size Assessment

Tumor size assessment is the measurement and documentation of a tumor’s dimensions or volume to characterize disease burden and monitor change over time. Clinicians obtain measurements from imaging studies such as CT, MRI, or ultrasound, or from direct examination and pathology, then compare standardized measurements across serial assessments while accounting for lesion shape and imaging conditions. In oncology, these data help establish a baseline, evaluate response or progression during treatment, and support prognosis and clinical-trial endpoints. Consistent acquisition, measurement methods, and reporting are essential because small differences can reflect technical variation rather than genuine biological growth or shrinkage.

Bioluminescence Imaging to Assess Tumor Growth in an Organotypic Mouse Brain Slice

2025

Source: Ciraku, L., et. al. An Ex Vivo Brain Slice Model to Study and Target Breast Cancer Brain Metastatic Tumor Growth. J. Vis. Exp. (2021).This video demonstrates the imaging of luciferase-expressing tumor cells in an organotypic mouse brain slice. Luciferin is added to the medium, and the plate is placed inside the chamber of the in vivo imaging system. Parameters for image capture are adjusted, and the tumor's shape and size are defined. The bioluminescent signals emitted by the tumor...

Visualization and Size Assessment of Faustovirus Using Electron Microscopy

Source: Bou Khalil, J. Y., et al. A Rapid Strategy for the Isolation of New Faustoviruses from Environmental Samples Using Vermamoeba vermiformis. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates imaging of faustovirus particles from an infected amoeba culture using transmission electron microscopy. It covers grid preparation, negative staining with ammonium molybdate to enhance contrast, and visualization of the virus under the microscope. The protocol concludes with measuring the size of the...

DCE-MRI of Orthotopic Pancreatic Tumor Xenografts: A Method to Assess Microvasculature in a Target Tumor Tissue

2023

This video describes the technique of DCE-MRI for orthotropic pancreatic tumor xenografts in mice. DCE-MRI is a non-invasive method to analyze microvasculature in a target tissue, and useful to assess vascular response in a tumor following a novel therapy. This method will assist investigators to apply DCE-MRI for orthotopic gastrointestinal cancer mouse models.
