Roux Limb Creation

Roux limb creation is a surgical technique that reroutes a segment of the small intestine to form a separate alimentary pathway, enabling reconstruction of the gastrointestinal tract. The procedure involves dividing the jejunum, bringing the downstream segment to a target organ, such as the stomach or biliary tree, and reconnecting the remaining bowel through a jejunojejunostomy to restore intestinal continuity. This configuration directs food, bile, and pancreatic secretions along controlled routes while reducing or bypassing selected intestinal segments. Roux limbs support procedures including gastric bypass, esophageal and biliary reconstruction, and treatment of complex gastrointestinal disease, making accurate limb planning essential for surgical function and outcomes.

This video describes a bariatric surgery-Roux-en-Y procedure. This involves the cutting of the jejunum- the middle portion of the intestine- to generate two intestinal limbs. The biliary limb is attached to the existing intestinal loop and the alimentary limb is attached to the stomach, creating a gastric bypass. The gastric bypass created here helps to decrease the nutrient uptake and efficiently reduces body weight.
