Ureteral Anastomosis Technique

Ureteral anastomosis is a surgical technique that reconnects separated or injured segments of the ureter, restoring continuity so urine can flow from the kidney to the bladder. The procedure typically involves trimming damaged tissue, spatulating the ureteral ends, and joining them with fine sutures in a tension-free, watertight mucosa-to-mucosa connection; temporary stenting may support healing and maintain patency. In medicine, this reconstruction is used after ureteral injury, obstruction, or resection of diseased tissue. Proper alignment and preservation of blood supply help reduce leakage, stricture formation, and recurrent obstruction, supporting long-term urinary tract function.

The murine model of irreversible unilateral ureteric obstruction (UUO) is presented together with the model of reversible UUO in which the ureteric obstruction is relieved by anastomosis of the severed ureter into the bladder. These models enable the study of renal inflammation and scarring as well as tissue remodeling.
