Quality Standards

Quality standards are agreed-upon criteria used to define, measure, and maintain the attributes that determine whether a product or service meets expected requirements. In microeconomics, they work by converting otherwise difficult-to-observe characteristics into verifiable information, helping buyers compare alternatives while allowing firms to signal reliability and manage production decisions. Standards can reduce information asymmetry, support consumer confidence, and improve market coordination, but compliance may increase production costs and affect prices, competition, and entry. Studying these trade-offs helps explain how regulation, certification, and private standards influence product quality, firm behavior, and overall market efficiency.
