Automated Behavior Recording

Automated behavior recording is the use of instruments and software to capture, detect, and quantify animal or human actions with limited direct observation, making behavioral measurement more consistent and scalable. Cameras or other sensors collect continuous data, while computational algorithms identify features such as position, movement, posture, or interactions and convert them into time-stamped behavioral measures. In neuroscience, these recordings support behavioral phenotyping, analysis of neural circuit function, and evaluation of changes caused by learning, disease, or treatment. Automated measurements can reduce observer bias, reveal subtle patterns, and enable high-throughput or longitudinal studies that would be difficult to conduct manually.

2016

An efficient and simple methodology for computer-based analysis of nematode swimming behavior in liquid is described. The method requires little to no investment for C. elegans laboratories. The hardware used is standard, and the computer software for the behavioral analysis (CeleST) is an open source one.

Our laboratory developed a novel high-throughput automated imaging system that is useful for the detection of several different behaviors in 7-day-old zebrafish larvae. The system can be used for detecting subtle changes in behavior after the larvae have been exposed to environmental toxicants or pharmaceuticals.
