Axonal Connection Severing

Axonal connection severing is the deliberate interruption of an axon or its synaptic connection to study how neural circuits respond to disconnection. In neuroscience, severing can be performed by physically cutting the axon or using targeted methods that interrupt axonal continuity, separating the neuronal cell body from its distal processes and altering signal transmission. The injury can trigger distinct responses, including degeneration of the disconnected segment and cellular pathways associated with repair or regeneration. Researchers use this approach to investigate axonal transport, neural injury, circuit reorganization, and recovery, providing insight into nervous-system connectivity and potential strategies for restoring function.

Bronchial thermoplasty is a non-drug procedure for severe persistent asthma that delivers thermal energy to the airway wall in a precisely controlled manner to reduce excessive airway smooth muscle. Reducing airway smooth muscle decreases the ability of the airways to constrict, thereby reducing the frequency of asthma attacks.

Measurement of Tension Release During Laser Induced Axon Lesion to Evaluate Axonal Adhesion to the Substrate at Piconewton and Millisecond Resolution

We measured the tension release in an axon that was partially lesioned with a laser dissector by simultaneous force spectroscopy measurement performed on an optically-trapped probe adhered to the membrane of the axon. The developed experimental protocol evaluates the axon adhesion to the culture substrate.

In biological systems, most metabolic pathways are interconnected. The cellular respiration processes that convert glucose to ATP—such as glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, and the citric acid cycle—tie into those that break down other organic compounds. As a result, various foods—from apples to cheese to guacamole—end up as ATP. In addition to carbohydrates, food also contains proteins and lipids—such as cholesterol and fats. All of these organic compounds are used as energy sources to produce...
