Beta-sheet Structures

Beta-sheet structures are protein secondary structures in which extended polypeptide strands align to form a pleated sheet, helping determine a protein’s shape and stability. They arise when hydrogen bonds form between backbone carbonyl and amide groups on neighboring strands, which may run in parallel or antiparallel orientations; side chains project alternately above and below the sheet. In neuroscience, beta-sheet enrichment is a key feature of misfolded proteins such as amyloid-beta and tau, promoting aggregation into fibrils and plaques associated with neurodegenerative disease. Understanding these structures supports research into protein folding, disease mechanisms, biomarker development, and potential aggregation-targeted therapies.

Beta

2024

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...

A balance sheet is a key component of financial statement analysis. It provides a snapshot of a company's financial position at a given time by listing its assets, liabilities, and shareholders' equity. It includes both current and long-lived assets and current and long-term liabilities. Assets reflect what the company owns, such as cash, inventory, and real estate, whereas liabilities represent what the company owes, including debts like loans and accounts payable. Balance sheet analysis is...

Imaging Amyloid-Beta Plaques in Brain Tissue Sections by Immunolabeling and Curcumin Staining

Source: Maiti, P. et. al.,. Labeling and Imaging of Amyloid Plaques in Brain Tissue Using the Natural Polyphenol Curcumin. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the imaging procedure of amyloid-beta plaques in brain tissue sections using immunolabeling and curcumin staining. Immunolabeling provides specificity for amyloid-beta, while curcumin selectively binds β-sheet-rich fibrils, enhancing visualization. The co-localization of red and green fluorescence confirms the presence of plaques.
