Cold Anesthesia

Cold anesthesia is a reversible state of reduced sensation, movement, and physiological activity produced by lowering an organism’s temperature, making it a useful approach in neuroscience and laboratory research. Cooling slows neuronal metabolism, membrane processes, and synaptic transmission, which can suppress coordinated neural activity and reduce responsiveness without relying on chemical anesthetic agents. Researchers use cold anesthesia to immobilize experimental animals during handling, dissection, surgery, or neural recording, particularly when temperature-sensitive physiology is relevant. Because cooling also alters circulation, metabolism, and neural function, experiments must control exposure duration and temperature to distinguish intended anesthetic effects from broader effects of hypothermia.

Working with Hot and Cold Sources

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Working with extreme temperatures, both high and low, is an integral part of many laboratory operations. For many, mentioning a laboratory instantly evokes the mental picture of a Bunsen burner. Bunsen burners and hot plates are used extensively in small and large operations in research laboratories and industries, thus making it necessary for all users to be aware of their safe handling...

University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals ("The Guide") states that pain assessment and alleviation are integral components of the veterinary care of laboratory animals. The definition of anesthesia is the loss of feeling or sensation. It is a dynamic event involving changes in anesthetic depth with respect to an animal's metabolism, surgical stimulation, or variations in the...

We seek to define the neural immune signaling responsible for cold-preconditioning as means to identify novel targets for therapeutics development to protect brain before injury onset. We present strategies for such work that require biological systems, experimental manipulations plus technical capacities that are highly reproducible and sensitive.

Responses to Heat and Cold Stress

2020

Every organism has an optimum temperature range within which healthy growth and physiological functioning can occur. At the ends of this range, there will be a minimum and maximum temperature that interrupt biological processes. When the environmental dynamics fall out of the optimal limit for a given species, changes in metabolism and functioning occur – and this is defined as stress. Plants respond to stress by initiating changes in gene expression - leading to adjustments in plant...
