Dark Adaptation

Dark adaptation is the gradual adjustment of visual sensitivity when the eyes move from bright conditions into darkness, allowing the nervous system to detect faint light. It begins as retinal photopigments regenerate, especially rhodopsin in rod photoreceptors, while neural circuits in the retina and brain adjust their signal processing; cone-mediated vision adapts first, followed by slower, more sensitive rod-mediated vision. In neuroscience, measuring dark-adaptation curves helps assess photoreceptor and retinal function, study visual pathways, and identify changes associated with aging, retinal disease, or nutritional deficiency. The process also illustrates how sensory systems balance sensitivity, dynamic range, and response speed.

Adhering to international standards and maintaining retinal dark adaptation are critical to acquire valid full-field electroretinogram responses in the diagnosis and management of inherited retinal diseases. A practical protocol using a portable darkroom is provided to obtain full-field electroretinogram for infants and children under sedation or general anesthesia in the operating room setting.

Dark Triad and Person Perception

Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et al. (2014) explored...
