Feeding Grasper Access

Feeding grasper access is a specialized approach for reaching neural structures through an organism’s feeding apparatus, providing a route for experimental manipulation or measurement. The method uses the grasper as an anatomical landmark and access pathway, while controlled positioning of fine tools helps expose or contact nearby tissues with minimal disruption. In neuroscience, this approach can support targeted delivery, neural recording, stimulation, or imaging in preparations where conventional access is difficult. Its value lies in enabling precise studies of feeding-related circuits and sensorimotor control while preserving the surrounding anatomy and, when appropriate, natural feeding behavior.

Zebrafish are emerging as a valuable model of dietary lipid processing and metabolic disease. Described are protocols of lipid-rich larval feeds, live imaging of dietary fluorescent lipid analogs, and quantification of food intake. These techniques can be applied to a variety of screening, imaging, and hypothesis driven inquiry techniques.

The feeding circuit in Drosophila melanogaster larvae serves a simple yet powerful model that allows changes in feeding rate to be correlated with alterations in the stomatogastric neural circuitry. This circuit is composed of central serotonergic neurons that send projections to the mouth hooks as well as the foregut.

Feeding of Ticks on Animals for Transmission and Xenodiagnosis in Lyme Disease Research

Lyme disease is the most commonly-reported vector-borne disease in North America. The causative agent, Borrelia burgdorferi is a spirochete bacterium transmitted by Ixodid ticks. Transmission and detection of infection in animal models is optimized by the use of tick feeding, which we describe here.
