Immunostained Retina

Immunostained retina is retinal tissue treated with antibodies to visualize specific cells, proteins, or structural features, making the organization and function of this complex neural tissue easier to study. In this method, primary antibodies bind target antigens in fixed retinal sections or whole mounts, while labeled secondary antibodies generate fluorescent or chromogenic signals that can be examined by microscopy. Researchers use immunostained retina to map neuronal and glial populations, trace retinal circuits, investigate synaptic organization, and assess changes associated with injury or disease. The approach links molecular identity with cellular anatomy, supporting neuroscience research on visual processing, development, degeneration, and potential therapies.

2011

A method to conditionally knockdown a target protein’s expression in the adult zebrafish retina is described, which involves intravitreally injecting antisense morpholinos and electroporating them into the retina. The resulting protein is knocked down for several days, which allows testing the protein’s role in the regenerating or intact retina.
