Loss Of Righting Reflex

Loss of righting reflex is the temporary inability of an animal to return to a normal upright position after being placed on its side, making it a behavioral indicator of altered nervous system function. It occurs when anesthesia, sedation, neurological disruption, or severe physiological impairment interferes with the coordinated vestibular, motor, and postural responses required for self-righting. In neuroscience research, investigators use this endpoint to assess anesthetic induction and recovery, compare sedative or hypnotic compounds, and estimate changes in central nervous system activity. The duration and reversibility of the reflex can also provide evidence of drug potency and behavioral recovery.

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.

Property rights refer to the legal control or ownership that individuals or entities have over a good or resource. These rights determine who can use the resource and under what conditions. Property rights describe the ability to use, sell, lease, or transfer ownership of a good or resource. Property rights are essential in ensuring efficient market allocations and...

Safety Checks and Ten Rights of Medication Administration

2015

According to the landmark 1999 Institute of Medicine report To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System, medication errors are a leading cause of preventable harm and death in hospitals. To mitigate these errors and enhance patient safety, nurses must consistently adhere to the Ten Rights of medication administration. These include the right patient, right medication, right dose, right time, right route, right documentation, right education, right to refuse, right assessment, and right...

Reflex Activity

2024

A reflex activity is an automatic, involuntary response to specific stimuli. It is a part of our survival mechanism, designed to protect us from potential harm. For example, when a bright light suddenly shines into our eyes, we instinctively close them or look away. This is a simple reflex activity orchestrated by the nervous system without conscious thought or effort. A reflex exam is a diagnostic procedure performed by a healthcare professional to evaluate the functionality of a patient's...

The Micturition Reflex

2024

Urination, or micturition involves the coordination of the bladder's detrusor muscle and two sphincters to ensure controlled bladder emptying. The process begins with bladder filling, where the bladder wall stretches as urine accumulates. This stretching activates the urine storage reflex, mediated by the sacral spinal segments and the pontine storage center. Efferent sympathetic impulses stimulate the detrusor muscle to relax and the internal urethral sphincter to contract, facilitating urine...
