Neonatal Rodent

Neonatal rodents are newborn rats or mice used to study early-life development, physiology, and disease, particularly because their nervous systems undergo rapid, measurable maturation. During this period, changing patterns of neuronal differentiation, synapse formation, myelination, and sensory experience shape circuit organization, while age-dependent physiology influences responses to injury, drugs, and environmental conditions. In neuroscience, neonatal rodent models support investigation of brain development, plasticity, neurodevelopmental disorders, and early-life insults such as hypoxia or inflammation. Careful control of postnatal age, housing, handling, and experimental procedures is essential for interpreting developmental outcomes and translating findings across species.

Primary dissociated midbrain dopamine cell cultures allow for the study of presynaptic characteristics of dopamine neurons. They can be used to monitor real-time dopamine release kinetics and protein/mRNA levels of regulators of dopamine exocytosis. Here, we show you how to generate these cultures from rodent neonates.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Animal records must be accurately maintained to ensure that data collection is correct. Records range from maintaining information on cage cards to having a detailed database with all of the relevant information on each animal. The primary component of recordkeeping is the individual identification of research animals. There are a variety of methods suitable for identifying mice and rats. This...

This protocol aims to demonstrate a reproducible venous administration route that can be used in rats and mice throughout the neonatal period. This procedure is important for preclinical rodent studies that wish to mirror drug administration in neonatal care units primarily using intravenous administration.

This article describes the methodology for administering short periods of intermittent hypoxia to postnatal day 1-8 mouse or rat pups. This approach effectively elicits a robust tissue level “priming effect” on cultured neural progenitor cells that are harvested within 30 min of hypoxia exposure.
