Optic Neuritis

Optic neuritis is inflammation of the optic nerve, the pathway that carries visual signals from the eye to the brain, and it can cause rapid vision loss and impaired color perception. In many cases, an immune-mediated attack damages the nerve’s myelin sheath, disrupting electrical signal conduction and producing pain that often worsens with eye movement; infection and other inflammatory disorders can also contribute. In neuroscience, optic neuritis provides a model for studying neuroinflammation and demyelination, particularly in multiple sclerosis. Clinical evaluation may combine visual testing, magnetic resonance imaging, and laboratory assessment to guide diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Object From Motion (OFM) and Time-constrained stereo protocols are sensitive tools to identify monocular and binocular dynamic visual function deficits, which are uniquely affected in optic neuritis patients. Furthermore, these tests may be used as quantitative noninvasive tools to assess the extent of myelination along visual pathways.

Optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) is an emerging technology capable of imaging optical absorption contrasts in vivo with cellular resolution and sensitivity. Here, we provide a visualized instruction on the experimental protocols of OR-PAM, including system configuration, system alignment, typical in vivo experimental procedures, and functional imaging schemes.

Optical Biosensing

Optical biosensors utilize light to detect the binding of a target molecule. These sensors can utilize a label molecule, which produces a measurable signal such as fluorescence, or these sensors can be label-free and use the changes in optical properties, such as refractive index, to sense for the binding of the target molecule. This video introduces both label and label-free optical biosensors, demonstrates their use in the laboratory, and shows some applications of the technology.
