Radiofrequency Coil

A radiofrequency coil is an electromagnetic component that transmits and receives radiofrequency signals in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), making it essential for producing images of biological tissues. During an MRI scan, the coil generates an oscillating magnetic field tuned to the nuclei’s Larmor frequency, excites tissue within the static magnetic field, and detects the resulting radiofrequency signal as the nuclei return toward equilibrium. In neuroscience, specialized head and surface coils improve signal-to-noise ratio and spatial sensitivity for structural MRI, functional MRI, and spectroscopy. Their design influences image quality, anatomical coverage, and the ability to measure brain structure, activity, and chemical composition.
