Light Intensity Measurement

Light intensity measurement is the quantitative assessment of light reaching a surface or emitted by a source, a critical step for reproducible visual, behavioral, and neural experiments. Instruments such as photometers, radiometers, and calibrated photodiodes detect incoming photons and convert them into an electrical signal, with measurements reported according to the quantity of interest, such as illuminance in lux or irradiance in watts per square meter. In neuroscience, these measurements help standardize visual stimuli, environmental lighting, and optogenetic illumination, allowing researchers to relate stimulus strength to neuronal activity and behavior. Careful calibration also improves comparisons across experiments and protects against unintended light-driven effects.

We developed the Visual-Motor Response to quantitate the motor output of larval zebrafish in response to light increments and decrements. We also examined zebrafish vision mutants, including the no optokinetic response (nrc) mutants, which were thought to be completely blind when tested by another vision assay, the optokinetic reflex.

Intense Pulsed Light for the Treatment of Dry Eye Owing to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Dry eye disease is an increasingly common condition, which strongly impair patients' life quality. Recently, a new device employing intense pulsed light, specifically designed for the periocular area, has been shown to improve tear film stability and ocular discomfort symptoms in dry eye disease owing to meibomian gland dysfunction.

We present a non-destructive method for sampling spatial variation in the direction of light scattered from structurally complex materials. By keeping the material intact, we preserve gross-scale scattering behavior, while concurrently capturing fine-scale directional contributions with high-resolution imaging. Results are visualized in software at biologically-relevant positions and scales.

Clinical Application of Intense Pulsed Light Therapy and Radio Frequency for Treatment of Ocular Surface Diseases

Intense pulsed light with the Optical Pulse Technology platform has US Food and Drug Association approval for the management of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)-associated Dry Eye Disease (DED) by improving meibomian gland function and reducing inflammation. Radiofrequency treatments result in meibum melting. Combination therapy may offer superior outcomes for DED and MGD.
