Constipation

Constipation is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by infrequent bowel movements, hard or difficult-to-pass stools, or a persistent sense of incomplete evacuation. It can arise when intestinal transit slows, excessive water is absorbed from stool, or defecation is impaired, producing dry stool and straining. In pharmacology, treatment targets these mechanisms through bulk-forming agents that increase stool volume, osmotic laxatives that retain water in the intestine, and stimulant laxatives that enhance intestinal motility and secretion. Understanding these drug classes supports rational treatment selection, particularly when constipation results from diet, reduced activity, disease, or medication use such as opioid therapy.
