Magnetic Bottle

A magnetic bottle is a magnetic-field configuration that confines charged particles within a defined region, helping researchers study plasma and particle motion. It typically uses stronger magnetic fields at both ends of a weaker central region: as a charged particle moves toward an end, the increasing field produces a magnetic mirror force that reverses its parallel motion, while the particle continues spiraling around field lines. Magnetic bottles provide a foundation for investigating plasma confinement, fusion concepts, and the behavior of energetic particles in space. Their limitations, including particle drift and loss through imperfect confinement, also guide the design of more effective magnetic-confinement systems.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Magnetic fields can be generated by moving charges, such as an electrical current. The magnetic field generated by a current can be calculated from the Maxwell equation. In addition, magnetic objects such as bar magnets can also generate magnetic fields due to microscopic dynamics of charges inside the material. Magnetic fields will exert magnetic force on other moving...

Colors and Magnetism

Color in Coordination Complexes When atoms or molecules absorb light at the proper frequency, their electrons are excited to higher-energy orbitals. For many main group atoms and molecules, the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which cannot be detected by the human eye. For coordination compounds, the energy difference between the d orbitals often allows photons in the visible range to be absorbed and emitted, which is seen as colors by the human eye.

Whole embryo culture technique allows us to culture mouse and rat embryos ex vivo condition during limited periods corresponding to midgestation stages. In this video protocol, we demonstrate our standard procedures of rat whole embryo culture after E12.5 using the rotator-type bottle culture system.
