Terahertz Metamaterial Absorber

Terahertz metamaterial absorbers are engineered surfaces that capture and dissipate electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz frequency range, enabling precise control of a part of the spectrum between microwaves and infrared light. They use subwavelength resonant structures, often combining electric and magnetic responses to match the absorber’s impedance with free space and suppress reflection, while the confined terahertz energy is converted into heat or another measurable response. In physics research, these devices support frequency-selective sensing, imaging, spectroscopy, and signal modulation. Their tunable designs also provide platforms for studying light-matter interactions and developing compact components for terahertz communications and detection.

Metamaterials at terahertz frequencies offer unique opportunities, but are challenging to fabricate in bulk. We adapt the fabrication procedure for microstructured polymer optical fibers to inexpensively fabricate metamaterials potentially on an industrial scale. We produce polymethylmethacrylate fibers containing ~10 μm diameter indium wires separated by ~100 μm, which exhibit a terahertz plasmonic response.

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Gas absorbers are used to remove contaminants from gas streams. Multiple designs are used to accomplish this objective1. A packed bed column uses gas and liquid streams running counter to each other in a column packed with loose packing materials, such as ceramics, metals, and plastics, or structured packing1. The packed bed uses surface area created by the packing to...
