Attitude Similarity

Attitude similarity is the degree to which two people share comparable evaluations, beliefs, or preferences about particular objects, issues, or experiences. In social psychology, perceived similarity can increase interpersonal attraction because shared attitudes support validation, reduce uncertainty, and promote smoother communication, while differences may require negotiation or activate cognitive dissonance. Researchers study attitude similarity through surveys, paired-participant comparisons, and behavioral measures to examine relationship formation, group cohesion, persuasion, and social influence. The concept helps explain why people often connect with others who hold similar views and how perceived agreement shapes judgments, interactions, and the development of close relationships.

The similarity hypothesis suggests that individuals are more likely to form relationships with others who share similar attitudes, beliefs, values, and interests. This concept has been widely studied in social psychology, demonstrating that perceived similarity fosters interpersonal attraction. In an experiment supporting this hypothesis, participants were presented with fabricated information indicating that strangers held attitudes similar to their own. The results showed that participants...
