Authenticity

Authenticity is the degree to which a person’s thoughts, feelings, values, and behavior reflect their genuine self rather than pressures to conform or impress others. In psychology, it develops through self-awareness and emotional processing, as people compare their actions with internal values and adjust behavior when these become misaligned. Researchers study authenticity in relation to identity formation, interpersonal relationships, well-being, and motivation. Greater authenticity can support psychological functioning by promoting self-directed choices and more honest social connections, while perceived inauthenticity may contribute to stress, internal conflict, or reduced life satisfaction.
