Avoidant Attachment

Avoidant attachment is a pattern of relating in which a person tends to minimize emotional closeness, rely heavily on self-sufficiency, and feel uncomfortable with dependence or intimacy. It commonly develops when early caregivers respond inconsistently or dismissively to bids for comfort, encouraging the child to suppress attachment needs and deactivate distress rather than seek reassurance. In adulthood, this pattern can shape communication, conflict responses, and romantic relationships, although attachment tendencies can change with supportive experiences and psychotherapy. Studying avoidant attachment helps psychologists understand emotion regulation, interpersonal behavior, and pathways toward more secure relationships.

Avoidance-avoidance conflict refers to a psychological situation where a person must choose between two or more unpleasant alternatives. These conflicts are particularly stressful because neither option is desirable. For instance, individuals who fear dental procedures may find themselves torn between enduring a painful toothache or facing the anxiety of...

Attachment is vital for infant development, as warm social interactions support growth and well-being. In a classic 1958 study by Harry Harlow, the significance of warmth and comfort in forming attachments was examined. Harlow separated newborn monkeys from their mothers and provided two artificial "mothers": one made of cold wire and the other covered in soft cloth. Despite the wire mother offering food, the infant monkeys preferred the comfort of the cloth mother, demonstrating that physical...

Source: Matthysse, A. G. Adherence of Bacteria to Plant Surfaces Measured in the Laboratory. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the evaluation of bacterial attachment to plant roots using phase-contrast microscopy. Root samples from seedlings incubated with bacteria are first mounted to check for free bacteria. The samples are then washed to remove loosely attached bacteria and remounted using a suitable coverslip to prevent damage. Finally, the number of bacteria attached to the root...

Attachment is a long-standing connection or bond with others. While Attachment Theory was conceived in developmental psychology to describe infant-caregiver bonding, it's been extended into adulthood to include romantic relationships. The Basis of Attachment Theory in Development Building on the work of Harlow and others, John Bowlby developed the concept of attachment theory. He defined attachment as the affectional bond or tie that an infant forms with the mother (Bowlby, 1969). An infant...
