Compassion Training

Compassion training is a structured psychological approach that develops the capacity to recognize suffering, respond with care, and support well-being in oneself and others. It commonly combines mindfulness with attention to emotional experience, perspective-taking, and practices that strengthen compassionate intentions, helping participants notice distress without becoming overwhelmed and choose supportive responses. In psychology, these programs are used to study emotion regulation, self-compassion, interpersonal relationships, and prosocial behavior, and they may complement approaches for stress, anxiety, or shame. Research on compassion training also informs education, healthcare, and workplace interventions by examining how trainable social-emotional skills affect mental health and behavior.

Compass

The compass is a fundamental instrument that operates by aligning its magnetic needle with Earth's magnetic field. This alignment facilitates navigation and orientation, offering a means to determine direction relative to magnetic north. However, the magnetic needle points to magnetic north, which differs slightly from true geographic north due to magnetic declination, which is the angular deviation between these two points. Declination varies based on geographic location and shifts over time...

Determining Spatial Orientation of Rock Layers with the Brunton Compass

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder Most rock units exhibit some form of planar surfaces or linear features. Examples include bedding-, fault-, fracture-, and joint-surfaces, and various forms of foliation and mineral alignment. The spatial orientation of these features form the critical raw data used to constrain models addressing the origin and subsequent deformation of rock units. Although now over 100 years since its invention and introduction, the Brunton...

Design Example: Marking Boundaries of a Site Using a Compass

Marking site boundaries using a compass is a precise surveying technique that ensures the accuracy of boundary delineation. The process begins by using provided site details, including the bearings and lengths of each boundary line. The initial step involves calculating latitudes and departures for all sides of the site. This computation verifies that the traverse is free of errors, ensuring a closed and accurate boundary. The process starts at a known point, such as Point A, which is often...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. A Stepwise Approach to Training Proper training and competency in animal procedures are essential to ensure high standards of animal welfare and reliable scientific outcomes. A structured, progressive training approach is...
