Contribution Reward Ratio

Contribution Reward Ratio is a psychological measure of perceived fairness that compares what a person contributes, such as effort, time, skills, or responsibility, with what they receive in return, including pay, recognition, support, or status. It operates through social comparison: individuals assess their contribution-to-reward balance against personal expectations or the ratios of relevant others, and perceived imbalance can produce dissatisfaction, reduced motivation, or psychological strain. In organizational psychology, the concept helps explain reactions to unequal workloads, compensation, and recognition. Researchers and practitioners can use it to evaluate workplace fairness, predict engagement and stress, and inform more balanced reward systems.
