Latency Stage

The latency stage is a developmental period in Sigmund Freud’s psychosexual theory, typically beginning around age six and continuing until puberty, when overt sexual interests are considered relatively quiet. In Freud’s model, libido is temporarily redirected or sublimated into learning, friendships, play, rule-following, and skill development as children strengthen the ego and internalize social norms. The concept has influenced discussions of childhood socialization, education, and personality development, while contemporary psychology treats it as a historical theoretical construct rather than a universally accepted sequence. Studying the latency stage helps place psychoanalytic ideas in context and compare them with modern developmental evidence.

Following the phallic stage in Freud's theory of psychosexual development, children enter a phase called the latency period, which lasts from approximately six to twelve years of age. Unlike earlier stages, where sexual impulses played a central role, Freud believed these impulses are repressed during the latency period, becoming part of the unconscious. This stage is often described as a time of psychological calm after the turbulence of the phallic stage. The latency period is not considered...

The protocol describes an efficient and reproducible model system to study herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) latency and reactivation. The assay employs homogenous sympathetic neuron cultures and allows for the molecular dissection of virus-neuron interactions using a variety of tools including RNA interference and expression of recombinant proteins.

Stages of Sleep

2024

Sleep progresses through distinct stages, each characterized by specific brain wave patterns and physiological responses ranging from wakefulness to stages of non-rapid eye movement, known as non-REM, to rapid eye movement, referred to as REM. Understanding these stages helps in recognizing how sleep supports various bodily and cognitive functions. Before sleep begins, in wakefulness, the brain exhibits primarily beta waves, which are high in frequency and low in amplitude, indicating alertness...

Various sedation levels offer significant advantages in facilitating procedural interventions for patients undergoing medical or invasive surgical procedures. These levels span from anxiolysis to general anesthesia, providing a spectrum of sedative effects to cater to specific patient needs. Anxiolysis reduces anxiety and is achieved through minimal sedation, enabling patients to remain awake and responsive while feeling more at ease during the procedure. This level can benefit minor...
