Light Processing

Light processing is the set of sensory and neural operations through which the visual system detects light and converts it into information about the environment. In the eye, photons activate rod and cone photoreceptors in the retina, initiating phototransduction and patterns of neural signaling that travel through retinal circuits and the optic nerve to visual brain regions, where features such as brightness, contrast, color, and motion are interpreted. Studying light processing helps psychologists explain perception, attention, visual adaptation, and disorders of vision, while also informing research on how lighting conditions influence behavior, alertness, and circadian regulation.

Light as Energy

2019

The energy required to carry out photosynthesis is light— typically electromagnetic radiation from the sun. The range of all possible wavelengths is known as the electromagnetic spectrum. Photons A photon is a discrete electromagnetic particle or bundle of energy. Photons are characterized by their frequency, wavelength, and amplitude, similar to the properties of a wave. Waves with higher frequencies transmit more energy and have shorter wavelengths than longer wavelengths that transmit less...
