Method Constant Stimulus

The method of constant stimuli is a psychophysical procedure for measuring sensory sensitivity by presenting a fixed set of stimulus intensities and recording participants’ responses. Across randomized trials, each intensity appears repeatedly, allowing researchers to calculate the proportion of detections or correct discriminations and plot a psychometric function; the sensory threshold is then estimated from a defined response level, such as 50% detection. In psychology, this method supports precise investigations of absolute thresholds, difference thresholds, and perceptual discrimination. Because it samples responses across the stimulus range, it also reveals variability in perception and provides a foundation for comparing sensory performance across conditions or populations.

The distractor-response binding paradigm is described. It can be used to shed light on the influence irrelevant stimuli, competing with targets for a response, can have on human action. Both response retrieval effects and distractor inhibition effects can be analyzed within the paradigm.

Titration ELISA as a Method to Determine the Dissociation Constant of Receptor Ligand Interaction

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA In contrast to the production of cars or toasters, where millions of identical copies are made and extensive prototype testing is possible, each civil engineering structure is unique and very expensive to reproduce (Fig.1). Therefore, civil engineers must extensively rely on analytical modeling to design their structures. These models are simplified abstractions of reality and are used to...

This article describes a technique for applying vibrotactile stimuli to the thigh of a human participant, and measuring the accuracy and reaction time of the participant's volitional response for various combinations of stimulation location and frequency.

Spectrophotometric Determination of an Equilibrium Constant

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Michael Evans — Georgia Institute of Technology The equilibrium constant, K, for a chemical system is the ratio of product concentrations to reactant concentrations at equilibrium, each raised to the power of their respective stoichiometric coefficients. Measurement of K involves determination of these concentrations for systems in chemical equilibrium. Reaction systems containing a single colored component can be studied spectrophotometrically. The relation between...
