Significance Threshold

A significance threshold is a predetermined probability cutoff used to judge whether data provide sufficient evidence against a null hypothesis, helping distinguish statistically unusual results from random variation. In psychological research, investigators compare a study’s p-value with an alpha level, commonly 0.05: results at or below the threshold are labeled statistically significant, although this does not measure effect size or practical importance. Setting and reporting the threshold before analysis supports transparent decisions, while interpreting it alongside confidence intervals, sample size, effect size, and replication evidence helps researchers evaluate findings and avoid overstating conclusions.

The Staircase Procedure for Finding a Perceptual Threshold

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Psychophysics is the name for a set of methods in perceptual psychology designed in order to relate the actual intensity of stimuli to their perceptual intensity. One important aspect of psychophysics involves the measurement of perceptual thresholds: How bright does a light need to be for a person to be able to detect it? How little pressure applied to the skin is detectable? How soft can a sound be and still be heard? Put...

Marketing is a pivotal, multifaceted function that acts as a strategic bridge between businesses and customers, extending beyond advertising and sales to contribute significantly to organizational success. Marketing guides businesses in: Market Understanding: This involves extensive research to comprehend the target audience's needs, forming the basis for product development, pricing, and communication strategies. Customer Acquisition & Retention: It plays a pivotal role in attracting...

Statistical Significance

2026

Once data is collected from both the experimental and the control groups, a statistical analysis is conducted to find out if there are meaningful differences between the two groups. A statistical analysis determines how likely any difference found is due to chance (and thus not meaningful). In psychology, group differences are considered meaningful, or significant, if the odds that these differences occurred by chance alone are 5 percent or less. Stated another way, if we repeated this...

Here, we describe a rapid reliable and simple procedure to determine the lowest temperature at which rats or mice show nocifensive behavior, i.e. the thermal nociceptive threshold (TNT). This method applies a slowly increasing thermal stimulus allowing precise and reproducible estimation of TNTs with minimum, if any, stress to the animals.

Significance of Center of Mass

The center of mass of an object is defined as the mass-weighted average position of all the particles that comprise the object. The significance of the center of mass of an object can be seen by looking at its dynamics. The time derivative of the center of mass gives its velocity, assuming that the object's mass remains constant over time. Furthermore, the total linear momentum of an object can be seen as the linear momentum of a single particle of the object's total mass moving with the...
