Empirical Research

Empirical research is the systematic investigation of questions through observable, measurable evidence rather than speculation, making it a foundation for testing and refining scientific knowledge. In psychology, researchers formulate hypotheses, operationalize concepts such as memory or anxiety, collect data through experiments, surveys, behavioral observations, or physiological measures, and analyze results using statistical methods. Careful sampling, controlled conditions, ethical procedures, and replication help distinguish reliable patterns from chance findings or bias. Empirical research supports evidence-based theories and interventions, while its findings can improve assessment, inform clinical and educational practice, and guide future studies of behavior and mental processes.

Determining the Empirical Formula

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams - SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Determining the chemical formula of a compound is at the heart of what chemists do in the laboratory every day. Many tools are available to aid in this determination, but one of the simplest (and most accurate) is the determination of the empirical formula. Why is this useful? Because of the law of conservation of mass, any reaction can be followed gravimetrically, or by change in mass. The empirical...

Empirical Method to Interpret Standard Deviation

2023

The empirical rule, also known as the three-sigma rule, allows a statistician to interpret the standard deviation in a normally distributed dataset. The rule states that 68% of the data lies within one standard deviation from the mean, 95% lies within two standard deviations from the mean, and 99.7% lies within three standard deviations from the mean. Additionally, this rule is also called the 68-95-99.7 rule. This rule is used widely in statistics to calculate the proportion of data values...

Empirical, Metagenomic, and Computational Techniques Illuminate the Mechanisms by which Fungicides Compromise Bee Health

2017

Microbial consortia within bumble bee hives enrich and preserve pollen for bee larvae. Using next generation sequencing, along with laboratory and field-based experiments, this manuscript describes protocols used to test the hypothesis that fungicide residues alter the pollen microbiome, and colony demographics, ultimately leading to colony loss.

Vibrational Spectra of a N719-Chromophore/Titania Interface from Empirical-Potential Molecular-Dynamics Simulation, Solvated by a Room Temperature Ionic Liquid

2020

A dye-sensitized solar cell was solvated by RTILs; using optimized empirical potentials, a molecular dynamics simulation was applied to compute vibrational properties. The obtained vibrational spectra were compared with experiment and ab initio molecular dynamics; various empirical potential spectra show how partial-charge charge parameterization of the ionic liquid affects vibrational spectra prediction.
