1. Testes DC

As máquinas DC são significativamente menos comuns do que costumavam ser antes da invenção da indução de AC e máquinas síncrogas. Eles permanecem comuns em aplicações simples de baixa potência, como brinquedos, pequenos robôs e equipamentos legados. As máquinas permanentes de ímã DC, que usam abundantes ímãs não-raras, são mais comuns do que suas peças de shunt e contador de séries devido à excitação mais simples, especialmente em aplicações de baixo custo e baixa complexidade.

A máquina DC opera com correntes e tensões DC em oposição a uma máquina CA, que requer correntes e tensões CA. As máquinas DC foram as primeiras a serem inventadas e utilizam dois campos magnéticos controlados pelas correntes DC. A mesma máquina pode ser facilmente reconfigurada para ser um motor ou gerador se a excitação de campo apropriada estiver disponível, uma vez que a máquina DC tem dois campos denominados campo e armadura. O campo geralmente está no lado do estator e a armadura está no lado do rotor (oposto ou de dentro para fora em comparação com as máquinas CA). A excitação de campo pode ser fornecida por ímãs permanentes ou uma enrolamento (bobina). Quando a corrente é aplicada na armadura ou bobina do rotor, ela passa da fonte DC para a bobina através de pincéis estacionários e anéis de deslizamento montados no rotor rotativo tocando os pincéis. Quando a bobina de armadura do rotor é um laço de transporte atual, e é exposta a um campo externo do estator ou ímã de campo, uma força é exercida no laço. Uma vez que o laço está "pendurado" em ambos os lados do motor usando rolamentos, a força produz um torque que irá girar o eixo do rotor em vez de movê-lo em qualquer outra direção.
Essa rotação faz com que os campos magnéticos se alinhem, mas, ao mesmo tempo, os anéis de deslizamento alternam os lados dos pincéis, ou "deslocamento", e é isso que é conhecido como o processo de comutação. Quando essa comutação ocorre, o fluxo de corrente na bobina do rotor é invertido e os campos magnéticos se opõem novamente, causando mais torque na mesma direção de rotação. Este processo continua e o eixo do rotor gira fornecendo ação motora. Na operação do gerador, a rotação mecânica é fornecida ao eixo do rotor e a corrente flui para fora do rotor depois que ele é induzido devido a uma bobina móvel sob um campo magnético.
As máquinas discutidas neste experimento têm um sinuoso campo em vez de ímãs permanentes. Um processo de comutação que é crítico na operação da máquina DC usa anéis de deslizamento e pincéis para transferir energia do rotor (armadura) para o mundo exterior, já que o rotor está girando e ter fios giratórios iria torcê-los e quebrá-los. No entanto, esses pincéis e anéis de deslizamento têm grandes desvantagens de confiabilidade, pois requerem manutenção regular, substituição de escovas, limpeza e podem causar faíscas. Isso levou à substituição da maioria das máquinas DC por máquinas CA que não têm esses problemas, e as máquinas DC restantes têm principalmente excitação permanente de campo ímã, como em brinquedos e ferramentas simples de baixa potência. As máquinas CA denominadas máquinas DC sem escova (ou BLDCs) são máquinas CA que utilizam um inversor eletrônico de fonte DC e energia para tirar as tensões CA do inversor. 
O objetivo deste experimento é testar duas configurações principais da máquina DC: shunt e série. Os testes destinam-se a estimar o fluxo residual na máquina e estudar as características sem carga e carregamento de diferentes configurações.

Os enrolamentos de série normalmente carregam alta corrente nominal avaliada na corrente de armadura nominal da máquina, uma vez que tanto as séries quanto os enrolamentos de armadura estão em série. Motores DC, equipamentos de acionamento, desde pequenos brinquedos e ferramentas elétricas recarregáveis até veículos elétricos. Essas máquinas eletromecânicas consistem em uma bobina condutora interna, chamada de armadura, e um ímã externo, chamado estator. Uma fonte CC fornece corrente para a armadura através de um comutador deslizante. Induzindo força eletromagnética e permitindo a rotação do loop. A magnitude da força eletromagnética depende do ângulo entre o campo magnético e a bobina, criando flutuações no torque com a rotação. Vários enrolamentos, espaçados ao redor da armadura, minimizam as flutuações de torque e evitam que o comutador cause curto-circuito na fonte de alimentação. O comutador deslizante muda periodicamente a direção da corrente através da bobina, impedindo ainda mais o alinhamento dos campos magnéticos. Antes de medir as características elétricas do motor CC, defina a fonte CC de baixa potência para 0.8 amperes e conecte os terminais de alimentação à armadura da máquina. Em seguida, registre a tensão e a corrente das fontes. Em seguida, use um multímetro para medir a tensão e a corrente na armadura, enrolando o campo de derivação e o campo em série. Use os dados para estimar a resistência em cada componente. Depois de medir as características básicas do gerador do motor DC, defina o reostato de campo embutido para as configurações máximas e meça sua resistência. Finalmente, defina o reostato de campo em série externa para seu limite superior e meça sua resistência. Após os testes do motor DC, uma máquina síncrona é usada para girar a armadura da máquina DC. Assim, a máquina DC é executada como um gerador, sem excitação de campo, depois sem carga. Nessas condições, a tensão terminal é igual a EMF. A velocidade de rotação do gerador é medida e usada para calcular o magnetismo retido pela armadura na ausência de excitação da bobina, chamado magnetismo residual. DC machines use direct current and direct voltage to create motion or generate electricity. They were the first machines of this kind to be invented. A DC machine works with two magnetic fields that are controlled by DC currents, and the same machine can be set up as either a motor or a generator when the right field excitation is available.

In a DC machine, the field is usually on the stator side and the armature is on the rotor side. That arrangement is the reverse of what is found in many AC machines. The field can come from permanent magnets or from a winding, which is a coil of wire.

When current reaches the armature coil, it passes from the DC source through brushes and slip rings. The brushes stay still, while the slip rings are mounted on the rotating rotor and touch the brushes as the rotor turns. A current-carrying loop in the armature, when placed in the field from the stator or field magnet, feels a force.

Because the loop is supported by bearings, that force creates torque. Torque makes the rotor shaft spin instead of moving in some other direction. As the shaft turns, the magnetic fields line up, and the slip rings switch sides on the brushes. This switching is called commutation.

During commutation, the current in the rotor coil reverses. The magnetic fields then oppose each other again, which keeps producing torque in the same direction. The cycle repeats, and the rotor shaft continues to spin. That is how the machine produces motor action.

In generator operation, the process is reversed. Mechanical rotation is applied to the rotor shaft, and current is induced in the moving coil under a magnetic field. The machines discussed here use a field winding rather than permanent magnets.

Brushes and slip rings are critical because they transfer energy between the spinning rotor and the outside circuit. They are needed because spinning wires would twist and break. At the same time, these parts have reliability problems. They need regular maintenance, brush replacement, and cleaning, and they may also cause sparking.

These drawbacks have led most DC machines to be replaced by AC machines that do not have the same issues. The DC machines that remain are often simple systems with permanent magnet field excitation, such as toys and low-power tools. AC machines called brushless DC machines, or BLDCs, use a DC source and a power electronic inverter to produce AC voltages.

The experiment in this collection focuses on two DC machine setups: shunt and series. It also aims to estimate the residual flux in the machine. In addition, it studies the no-load and loading characteristics of the different configurations.
