Scientific Method

O método científico é uma estrutura de técnicas e perguntas que os cientistas usam para investigar fenômenos com o objetivo de tornar as descobertas científicas simples e reprodutíveis. Tem sido vagamente observado por experimentadores desde o século 4 aC, mas o primeiro método científico devidamente formalizado foi cunhado durante o Renascimento europeu. Aqui, indivíduos na vanguarda da ciência como Francis Bacon, Galileu e Isaac Newton começaram a colocar em prática as regras que usamos para realizar experimentos hoje. 
Normalmente, o primeiro passo do método científico é formular uma pergunta, geralmente após a observação de um fenômeno. Por exemplo, digamos que você tenha criado lagartas e tenha notado que algumas demoram mais do que outras para chegar à pupação. E você se pergunta, as lagartas se desenvolvem em taxas diferentes dependendo da temperatura? 
É aqui que entra a segunda parte do método científico, a hipótese. Uma hipótese é uma explicação incerta de por que observamos o que observamos, e existem dois tipos principais. A primeira é a hipótese experimental ou alternativa, e implica que haverá uma relação entre as variáveis investigadas, a temperatura e o desenvolvimento da lagarta, neste caso. Portanto, nossa hipótese experimental pode ser que as lagartas levarão mais tempo para ir do ovo à pupação se forem criadas em temperaturas mais frias. Crucialmente, uma boa hipótese será testável. Para nossas lagartas, podemos mudar a temperatura e registrar o tempo que leva para elas passarem do ovo à pupa, e falsificável. Portanto, se leva mais ou menos o mesmo tempo para as lagartas se desenvolverem, independentemente da temperatura, podemos aceitar que a hipótese provavelmente era falsa. O segundo tipo de hipótese é a hipótese nula. Isso normalmente especula que não haverá nenhuma mudança ou diferença significativa observada durante o experimento. Em nosso exemplo de lagarta, diríamos que as lagartas se desenvolverão na mesma taxa em cada condição de temperatura. 
Uma vez que temos nossas hipóteses, a terceira etapa do método científico abrange a experimentação e a coleta de dados. Em um experimento típico, haverá dois tipos de variáveis. A variável independente é algo diretamente manipulado pelo experimentador. Então, com nossas lagartas, estamos alterando a variável independente quando mudamos a temperatura. A variável dependente, também conhecida como variável de resposta, deve ser afetada pelo estado da variável independente. Então, quando expomos nossas lagartas a diferentes temperaturas, a resposta, a variável dependente, é a taxa na qual elas se desenvolvem. 
Existem também dois tipos principais de dados que podem ser coletados para apoiar ou falsificar as hipóteses. O primeiro são os dados qualitativos, que normalmente se referem a observações descritivas feitas com os sentidos, visão, tato, audição, olfato ou até mesmo paladar. Em nosso experimento, podemos registrar que as lagartas parecem se mover e comer muito na condição normal de temperatura, em comparação com a mais fria. Em contraste com os dados qualitativos, os dados quantitativos podem ser medidos e anotados como números. Então, quando contamos o número de horas que a lagarta leva desde a eclosão até a pupa, isso nos dá um número definitivo. Sempre que possível, é quase importante ter uma condição de controle em qualquer experimento em que manipulamos as variáveis independentes. Em nosso experimento com lagartas, podemos cultivar as lagartas a uma temperatura ambiente padrão definida de 21 graus como controle, porque isso demonstra o que acontece quando as lagartas se desenvolvem em condições normais em comparação com ambientes experimentais. 
Em experimentos observacionais, um controle pode não ser necessário ou mesmo possível. Por exemplo, imagine que nossas lagartas agora são borboletas crescidas, alimentando-se de néctar em um jardim de flores. Em nossa hipótese experimental, sugerimos que eles preferem se alimentar das grandes flores rosa, enquanto nossa hipótese nula sugere que eles não têm preferência e visitarão as flores aleatoriamente. Nesse caso, simplesmente observar e registrar o número de vezes que as borboletas visitam cada tipo de flor fornecerá dados suficientes para confirmar ou rejeitar nossas hipóteses sem a necessidade de manipulação de quaisquer variáveis ou a necessidade de um controle. 
Depois que os dados forem coletados, o próximo passo é descobrir o que tudo isso significa. Os cientistas compararão as previsões de suas duas hipóteses para descobrir se podem rejeitar a hipótese nula. Isso pode ser feito comparando os valores da variável dependente nas condições controle versus as condições experimentais. Se não forem iguais, a hipótese nula pode ser rejeitada. Se os dados coletados apóiam uma hipótese, como as lagartas levaram significativamente mais horas para ir do ovo à pupa quando mantidas no clima mais frio, isso dá mais credibilidade à hipótese experimental, mas criticamente não indica que a hipótese é definitivamente verdadeira, porque experimentos futuros podem revelar novas informações. 
A parte final do método científico é onde tiramos conclusões e discutimos o que nossas descobertas podem significar. Aqui, os cientistas podem consultar outros experimentos ou outra literatura para contextualizar suas descobertas e apresentar explicações de por que os resultados mostraram o que eles fizeram. Por exemplo, a conclusão pode ser que as lagartas gostam de crescer em temperaturas mais próximas de seu habitat natural. Isso pode, por sua vez, levantar novas questões, como outras espécies pupam em taxas diferentes em temperaturas diferentes também? Isso pode inspirar novos experimentos, que podemos testar usando, você adivinhou, o método científico.

Antes da investigação, um cientista deve definir a questão a ser abordada. Este primeiro passo crucial no processo científico envolve a observação de alguns fenômenos naturais de interesse. Essa observação deve levar a uma série de perguntas sobre os fenômenos. Este estágio freqüentemente requer pesquisa de fundo necessária para entender o assunto e trabalhos anteriores em ideias semelhantes. Revisar e avaliar pesquisas anteriores permite que os cientistas refinem suas perguntas para abordar com mais precisão as lacunas no conhecimento científico. Definir uma questão de pesquisa e entender pesquisas anteriores relevantes influenciará a forma como o método científico é aplicado, tornando-se um primeiro passo importante no processo de pesquisa.
Um exemplo cotidiano: você está tentando chegar à escola ou ao trabalho e seu carro não liga. O processo de pensamento pelo qual a maioria das pessoas passa nessa situação reflete claramente o método científico oficial (depois que você termina de ficar chateado). Primeiro, você faz uma observação: meu carro não liga! A pergunta que se segue: por que não está funcionando?
<h4>Etapa 2: A hipótese</h4>
O próximo passo é fazer uma hipótese, com base no conhecimento prévio. Uma hipótese é uma "explicação incerta" ou uma conjectura não comprovada que busca explicar algum fenômeno com base no conhecimento obtido durante a execução de experimentos ou observações subsequentes. Geralmente, os cientistas desenvolvem várias hipóteses para responder às suas perguntas e testá-las sistematicamente.
Todas as hipóteses devem atender a certos critérios para que o processo científico funcione. Primeiro, uma hipótese deve ser testável e falsificável. Este aspecto da hipótese é crítico e de muito maior importância do que a hipótese estar correta. Uma hipótese testável é aquela que gera previsões testáveis, abordadas por meio de observações ou experimentos. Uma hipótese falsificável é aquela que, por meio da observação de resultados conflitantes, pode ser provada errada. Isso permite que os investigadores ganhem mais confiança ao longo do tempo, não acumulando evidências mostrando que uma hipótese está correta, mas sim mostrando que situações que poderiam estabelecer sua falsidade não ocorrem.
As hipóteses vêm em duas formas: hipóteses nulas e hipóteses alternativas. A hipótese nula é testada contra a hipótese alternativa e reflete que não haverá mudança observada no experimento. A hipótese alternativa é geralmente a descrita nos dois parágrafos anteriores, também chamada de hipótese experimental. A hipótese alternativa é o resultado previsto do experimento. Se a hipótese nula for rejeitada, isso cria evidências para a hipótese alternativa.
Um exemplo cotidiano: talvez esteja congelando lá fora e, portanto, é bastante provável que a bateria do seu carro esteja descarregada. Talvez você saiba que estava com pouca gasolina na noite anterior e, portanto, é provável que o tanque esteja vazio.
<h4>Etapa 3: Experimentação e coleta de dados</h4>
De qualquer forma, o próximo passo é fazer mais observações ou realizar experimentos que levem a conclusões. Após a formulação de hipóteses, os cientistas planejam e conduzem experimentos para testar suas hipóteses. Esses experimentos fornecem dados que apoiarão ou falsificarão a hipótese. Os dados podem ser coletados a partir de observações quantitativas ou qualitativas. A informação qualitativa refere-se a observações que podem ser feitas simplesmente usando os sentidos, seja por meio da visão, audição, paladar, olfato ou tato. Em contraste, as observações quantitativas são aquelas em que medições precisas de algum tipo são usadas para investigar a hipótese.
Um experimento é um procedimento projetado para determinar se as observações do mundo real concordam ou refutam as previsões derivadas da hipótese. Se a evidência de um experimento apóia uma hipótese, isso dá mais credibilidade à hipótese. Isso não indica que a hipótese seja verdadeira, pois experimentos futuros podem revelar novas informações sobre a hipótese original. O projeto experimental é outra etapa crítica no método científico e pode ter um grande efeito nos resultados e conclusões que se tira de um experimento. Pensamento cuidadoso e tempo devem ser dedicados ao projeto experimental e à minimização de possíveis erros. O experimento deve ser projetado de forma que todas as variáveis ou fatores que possam influenciar o resultado do experimento estejam sob o controle do pesquisador. Dois tipos de variáveis são usados para descrever as condições em um experimento: a variável independente e a dependente, ou resposta. A variável independente é diretamente manipulada ou controlada pelo cientista e geralmente é o que se prevê que afetará a variável dependente. A variável dependente, ou resposta, depende, portanto, do valor da variável independente. Os experimentos geralmente são projetados para que um fator específico seja manipulado no experimento para iluminar as relações de causa e efeito.
Um exemplo cotidiano: o carro ainda tem todas as suas peças? Esta é a chave certa? O que diz o medidor de gás? Um jump start ajuda?
Outro aspecto importante no desenho experimental é o papel do tratamento controle, que representa uma condição de tratamento não manipulada. O tratamento controle é mantido nas mesmas condições que o tratamento experimental, mas a manipulação experimental não é aplicada ao controle. Por exemplo, se um pesquisador estivesse testando os efeitos da salinidade do solo no crescimento das plantas, o solo no tratamento de controle não teria adição de sal. O controle fornece uma linha de base de condições "normais" com as quais comparar os tratamentos experimentais.
O planejamento experimental também deve incorporar réplicas de cada tratamento. A repetibilidade dos resultados experimentais é uma parte importante do método científico que garante a validade e a precisão dos dados. É muito difícil controlar todos os aspectos de um experimento, portanto, há uma variação inerente nos resultados que não podem ser controladas, mesmo sob os experimentos mais cuidadosamente planejados e controlados. Ter réplicas permite que um investigador estime essa variação inerente nos resultados. O registro e a medição precisos dos dados também são de grande importância para garantir a precisão dos resultados e as conclusões que se tira dos resultados.
<h4>Etapa 4: Resultados e Análise de Dados</h4>
O próximo passo no método científico envolve determinar o que significam os resultados do experimento. Os cientistas comparam as previsões de sua hipótese nula com as de sua hipótese alternativa para determinar se eles são capazes de rejeitar a hipótese nula. Rejeitar a hipótese nula significa que há uma probabilidade significativa de que os valores da variável dependente nos tratamentos controle versus experimental não sejam iguais entre si. Se existirem diferenças significativas, pode-se rejeitar a hipótese nula e aceitar a hipótese alternativa. Por outro lado, o investigador pode não rejeitar a hipótese nula, o que significa que o tratamento não tem efeito sobre os resultados. Antes que os cientistas possam fazer qualquer afirmação sobre sua hipótese nula a partir de seus dados experimentais ou observações, testes estatísticos são necessários para garantir a validade dos dados e uma interpretação adicional dos dados. Os testes estatísticos permitem aos pesquisadores determinar se existem diferenças genuínas entre os tratamentos controle e experimental. A partir daí, eles podem criar figuras e tabelas para ilustrar suas descobertas.
<h4>Etapa 5: Conclusões</h4>
A última parte do método científico envolve fornecer explicações dos resultados e as conclusões que podem ser logicamente tiradas dos resultados. Geralmente, esta etapa do processo científico também exige que se revisite a literatura científica e compare seus resultados com outros experimentos ou observações sobre tópicos relacionados. Isso permite que os pesquisadores coloquem seu experimento em um contexto mais geral e elaborem o significado de resultados específicos. Além disso, permite que eles expliquem como seu trabalho se encaixa em um contexto mais amplo em sua disciplina.
O processo científico não para por aqui! O processo científico funciona ao longo do tempo à medida que o conhecimento sobre tópicos da ciência se acumula e impulsiona nossa compreensão de mecanismos ou processos específicos que explicam os fenômenos naturais. Se não rejeitarmos nossa hipótese nula, torna-se necessário revisitar os estágios iniciais do método científico e tentar reformular nossas perguntas e entender por que um resultado antecipado não foi alcançado.
<h4>Aplicação do Método Científico</h4>
A única diferença entre o uso desse método na vida cotidiana e no laboratório é que os cientistas documentam cuidadosamente seu trabalho, desde a observação até a hipótese, o experimento e, finalmente, as conclusões e a revisão por pares. Além disso, ao contrário da resolução de problemas fora do laboratório, o método científico no laboratório inclui condições e variáveis controladas.
Vamos investigar o método científico usando um exemplo do laboratório. Sabe-se que o crescimento das plantas é afetado por micróbios, como bactérias e fungos, que vivem em seu solo. É possível descobrir quais micróbios têm quais efeitos envasando plantas em solo completamente estéril e, em seguida, adicionando micróbios um de cada vez, ou em diferentes combinações e medindo o crescimento da planta. Agora vamos encaixar isso nos termos usados para descrever o método científico:
Observação e Pergunta: Existem micróbios no solo ... eles afetam o crescimento das plantas?

Experimental: Um micróbio específico de interesse fará com que as plantas cresçam mais lentamente.
Nulo: A presença ou ausência de micróbios não terá efeito sobre o crescimento das plantas
Experimento: montar grupos de plantas em 1) solo estéril, 2) solo com o micróbio adicionado e 3) solo natural. Meça o crescimento das plantas ao longo do tempo, usando uma régua.
Conclusão: se as plantas do grupo 2 crescem mais lentamente do que as outras duas, a hipótese é sustentada. Isso precisa ser apoiado por análises estatísticas de muitas plantas para ser considerado significativo. Um experimento como esse não é legítimo com apenas uma planta por grupo.
O grupo 1 é um controle que mostra que as plantas podem crescer no solo estéril. O grupo 3 é um controle que mostra que as plantas podem crescer em condições normais. O grupo 2 é o grupo experimental. Seria possível adicionar diferentes quantidades do micróbio, ou diferentes micróbios, para introduzir mais variáveis. O ponto principal é que o pesquisador tem algo com o qual comparar o grupo experimental - o grupo de controle. Se o experimento incluísse apenas o grupo 2 e o pesquisador determinasse que as plantas "pareciam doentes", isso seria uma questão de opinião. A única maneira de tornar essa observação científica é ter plantas saudáveis para medir. O tipo ou quantidade de micróbio usado é a variável independente, porque o pesquisador tem controle sobre ele. O tamanho da planta no final do experimento é a variável dependente ou de resposta porque é o resultado.
Em última análise, trabalhos como esse são publicados em revistas científicas para que outros pesquisadores possam ler sobre os métodos usados e as conclusões tiradas. Publicações como essa estão sujeitas a revisão por pares, o que significa que um artigo não será publicado em um periódico até que outros pesquisadores o verifiquem e concordem que está bem feito. Como uma comunidade de cientistas, os conceitos gerais são desenvolvidos com base nos padrões observados nos experimentos que os cientistas individuais realizam. Isso resulta no desenvolvimento de uma teoria científica. Este termo significa que há um consenso entre os pesquisadores de que existe um determinado conceito ou processo. É importante notar que a palavra teoria não significa a mesma coisa que hipótese. Uma vez que os cientistas rotulam um conceito com esse termo, ele é considerado verdadeiro, considerando todos os dados atualmente disponíveis. The scientific method gives scientists a way to solve problems and explain natural events. Its development grew alongside new ideas in science during the European Renaissance. Thinkers such as Francis Bacon, Galileo, and Isaac Newton helped formalize the process. Although the method has changed over time, much of its basic framework is still used today.

The process begins with observation and a clear question. A scientist first notices a natural phenomenon and then asks why it happens. This stage often includes background research. Reading earlier studies helps refine the question and identify gaps in scientific knowledge. In everyday life, this can look like noticing that a car will not start and asking why it is not working.

Next comes the hypothesis. A hypothesis is an unproven explanation based on prior knowledge. Scientists often develop more than one hypothesis and test them in a systematic way. A good hypothesis must be testable and falsifiable, which means it can produce predictions and can also be shown wrong. Hypotheses are often written as a null hypothesis, which predicts no change, and an alternative hypothesis, which predicts the expected outcome. If the null hypothesis is rejected, that supports the alternative hypothesis.

After that, scientists collect data through experiments or more observations. Experiments are designed to test the predictions made by a hypothesis. Data may be qualitative, based on the senses, or quantitative, based on measurements. Careful experimental design is important because it helps reduce error and control factors that could affect the outcome. The independent variable is the factor the scientist changes, and the dependent, or response, variable is the result that is measured.

Controls and replicates are also essential. A control treatment is a condition that is not manipulated, but it is kept under the same conditions as the experimental treatment. It provides a baseline for comparison. Replicates, or repeated trials, help scientists estimate natural variation in the data and check that results can be repeated. Precise recording and measurement make the results more reliable.

Scientists then analyze the results to see what the data mean. They compare the null hypothesis with the alternative hypothesis and use statistical tests before making claims. Statistics help show whether differences between control and experimental treatments are real. Results are often displayed in figures and tables so they can be reviewed and understood more easily.

The final step is drawing conclusions. Scientists explain what the results mean and compare them with earlier research on related topics. This places the work in a wider scientific context and shows how it fits into the field. The scientific process does not end there. If the null hypothesis is not rejected, scientists return to the earlier steps and revise the question or hypothesis.

In lab work, the scientific method is carefully documented from start to finish. It also includes controlled conditions and variables. A plant-microbe experiment shows how this works. Researchers can grow plants in sterile soil, add one microbe at a time, or use natural soil, then measure plant growth with a ruler. In this example, the question is whether microbes affect plant growth. The experimental hypothesis is that one microbe will slow growth, and the null hypothesis is that microbes will have no effect.

The setup includes a control group and an experimental group. One group shows that plants can grow in sterile soil, and another shows that plants can grow in natural soil. The group with the added microbe is the experimental group. The type or amount of microbe is the independent variable, and plant size at the end is the dependent variable. A claim based on only one plant per group would not be valid. The results must be supported by statistical analysis from many plants.

Work like this is published in scientific journals so other researchers can read the methods and conclusions. These publications are checked through peer review before they are accepted. Over time, patterns from many experiments help scientists build broader ideas about how nature works. This is how scientific theory develops. In science, theory means a concept supported by a strong body of evidence, not a guess.
