Um pigmento em particular, a clorofila, é o mais abundante no verão. Ele absorve comprimentos de onda de alta energia, roxo, azul e vermelho da luz solar e reflete os comprimentos de onda verdes, dando às folhas sua aparência verde. Existem outros pigmentos nas folhas, como carotenóides, que refletem a luz vermelha e amarela. No outono, as folhas param de repor seus pigmentos. O valor de Rf é a razão entre a distância percorrida por um pigmento e a distância percorrida pelo solvente. Cada pigmento tem um valor de Rf exclusivo e podemos identificar facilmente os pigmentos comparando os valores calculados com os padrões. A fotossíntese, o processo pelo qual as plantas convertem dióxido de carbono, água e energia luminosa em energia química e oxigênio, é realizada principalmente nas folhas de uma planta, e a clorofila desempenha um papel crítico nesse processo. Os cloroplastos contêm dezenas de moléculas de clorofila, cada uma realizando uma tarefa específica e interagindo de maneiras complexas. Em última análise, a energia da luz faz com que as moléculas de clorofila liberem elétrons que são utilizados em outros processos metabólicos. Portanto, a clorofila precisa de um suprimento contínuo de elétrons para substituir os que perde. Esses elétrons de substituição vêm da divisão de moléculas de água em prótons, elétrons e moléculas de oxigênio. Em altas taxas de fotossíntese, a água é dividida mais rapidamente para reabastecer os elétrons e o oxigênio é gerado rapidamente.Esse fenômeno nos ajuda a avaliar a taxa de fotossíntese no laboratório, simplesmente suspendendo os discos das folhas em uma solução de bicarbonato, onde o bicarbonato atua como uma rica fonte de carbono. Também conhecidos como produtores primários, eles fornecem a energia necessária aos organismos que os comem, que são conhecidos como consumidores.

Os organismos que podem fotossintetizar são bastante diversos, incluindo cianobactérias, alguns protistas, como algas, bem como plantas. Nas células eucarióticas, a fotossíntese ocorre em uma organela chamada cloroplasto, que aparece verde devido ao seu alto teor do pigmento clorofila. Pigmentos são moléculas que absorvem luz em determinados comprimentos de onda. A luz que não é absorvida por um pigmento é refletida como luz visível que pode ser observada como a cor do pigmento. As plantas produzem vários pigmentos com várias funções que absorvem a luz do sol em diferentes comprimentos de onda. Por exemplo, a clorofila absorve luz nos comprimentos de onda vermelho e azul enquanto reflete os comprimentos de onda que correspondem ao verde. Alguns outros pigmentos, como carotenóides, antocianinas e betalaínas, geralmente refletem a luz em comprimentos de onda de baixa energia entre 600 e 800 nm e, portanto, aparecem de amarelo a vermelho. Nas regiões temperadas, a diminuição da clorofila no outono revela esses pigmentos quando as folhas mudam de cor para vermelhos, amarelos e laranjas.

<h4>Cloroplastos</h4>

A clorofila é o pigmento primário dos cloroplastos usados na fotossíntese, enquanto outros pigmentos ajudam a canalizar a energia da luz para as clorofilas ou protegem a célula contra danos causados pela luz. A fotossíntese consiste em duas vias, que são conhecidas como reações dependentes de luz e independentes de luz e ocorrem em locais distintos dentro dos cloroplastos. Essas organelas contêm três membranas: uma membrana externa, uma membrana interna e a membrana tilacóide mais interna, que forma longas dobras em forma de disco dentro do cloroplasto. O espaço cheio de líquido entre as membranas interna e tilacóide é chamado de estroma. As reações dependentes de luz começam quando a energia da luz solar excita os elétrons dos pigmentos de clorofila que estão embutidos na membrana tilacóide. Esses elétrons de alta energia são então passados de uma molécula transportadora de elétrons para outra dentro da membrana tilacóide, conhecida coletivamente como cadeia de transporte de elétrons. Cada transferência dentro da cadeia de transporte de elétrons leva o elétron a um estado de energia mais baixo, liberando, portanto, energia. Parte dessa energia é aproveitada para sintetizar moléculas pequenas e ricas em energia, como trifosfato de adenosina (ATP) e nicotinamida adenina dinucleotídeo fosfato (NADPH). O elétron perdido da clorofila é substituído por hidrólise (o que significa divisão da água), quando os átomos de hidrogênio e oxigênio são separados. Os átomos de hidrogênio gerados pela hidrólise doam seus elétrons para a clorofila, enquanto as moléculas de oxigênio são liberadas na atmosfera. O fluxo de elétrons através da hidrólise permite que os pigmentos de clorofila absorvam continuamente a energia da luz, excitando repetidamente novos elétrons e passando-os pela cadeia de transporte de elétrons.

As reações independentes da luz ocorrem no estroma. Este processo usa a energia da luz indiretamente, utilizando a energia das moléculas de ATP e NADPH geradas pelas reações dependentes de luz. Durante esse caminho, o dióxido de carbono (CO2) é usado para construir um açúcar de três carbonos, que pode ser transformado em glicose ou outras biomoléculas. Esse processo também é conhecido como fixação de carbono ou sequestro de carbono, porque o carbono é sequestrado da atmosfera e fixado em biomoléculas.

<h4>Fotossíntese e o meio ambiente</h4>

O sequestro de carbono durante a fotossíntese é uma etapa importante do ciclo do carbono, no qual o CO2 flui de um reservatório para outro em um ritmo relativamente constante. Mudanças na vazão de CO2 podem alterar o equilíbrio entre os reservatórios. Mais importante, como o CO2 é um gás de efeito estufa, o aumento de sua concentração atmosférica contribui para o aumento das temperaturas. A maior parte desse CO2 é emitida pela queima de combustíveis fósseis, devolvendo assim o dióxido de carbono que foi sequestrado pela fotossíntese há centenas de milhões de anos para a atmosfera a uma taxa sem precedentes. Portanto, as florestas e as algas oceânicas são cada vez mais imperativas no resfriamento da Terra, reduzindo o aumento dos níveis de CO2 1. Esta é uma das muitas razões pelas quais o desmatamento é uma preocupação séria em um clima em mudança.

Assim como as plantas usam a fotossíntese para capturar a energia da luz em biomoléculas, os pesquisadores estão investigando a fotossíntese artificial para criar biocombustíveis neutros em carbono como uma alternativa aos combustíveis fósseis. Semelhante aos painéis solares, os métodos de fotossíntese artificial obtêm energia do sol e a armazenam como energia química, parte da qual pode ser armazenada por longos períodos de tempo, em vez de convertê-la diretamente em eletricidade2. Os cientistas também foram capazes de produzir açúcares simples e ácido lático usando bactérias fotossintéticas3. Essa abordagem tem amplas aplicações na fabricação de biomoléculas, biocombustíveis e até plásticos biodegradáveis com pouca ou nenhuma emissão nociva. Além disso, essa abordagem pode ser usada para remover o excesso de CO2 da atmosfera. Um conceito semelhante está sendo aplicado na área médica, onde bactérias fotossintéticas estão sendo usadas para produzir substâncias fisiologicamente ativas e medicamentos, alguns dos quais têm sido aplicados ao diagnóstico e tratamento do câncer4. Pesquisas futuras podem aumentar a eficiência da produção de moléculas sustentáveis e neutras em carbono, ao mesmo tempo em que remediam os efeitos do aumento dos níveis atmosféricos de CO2.

Photosynthesis turns sunlight into chemical energy in the form of glucose. This process powers most life on Earth by helping autotrophs, or primary producers, make food. The glucose they make can provide quick energy or be stored as starch for later use. Consumers depend on these producers for energy.

Photosynthesis happens in many kinds of organisms. Cyanobacteria, some protists such as algae, and plants can all carry out this process. In eukaryotic cells, it takes place in the chloroplast. Chloroplasts look green because they contain chlorophyll, a pigment that absorbs light at specific wavelengths.

Plants use several pigments to capture light. Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light and reflects green light. Other pigments, including carotenoids, anthocyanins, and betalains, absorb or reflect different wavelengths and often appear yellow to red. In autumn, when chlorophyll levels drop in temperate regions, these pigments become visible and leaves change color.

Photosynthesis has two main stages: light-dependent reactions and light-independent reactions. These stages happen in different parts of the chloroplast. The chloroplast has an outer membrane, an inner membrane, and an inner thylakoid membrane that forms disc-like folds. The space between the inner membrane and thylakoids is the stroma.

The light-dependent reactions begin in the thylakoid membrane when sunlight excites electrons in chlorophyll. Those electrons move through an electron transport chain, dropping to lower energy levels and releasing energy. The cell uses that energy to make ATP and NADPH. Water splitting, also called hydrolysis, replaces the lost electrons in chlorophyll. This process releases oxygen into the atmosphere and helps keep the flow of electrons going.

The light-independent reactions take place in the stroma. They use ATP and NADPH from the first stage to build a three-carbon sugar from carbon dioxide. That sugar can then be turned into glucose or other biomolecules. This is also called carbon fixation or carbon sequestration because carbon is pulled from the atmosphere and stored in living molecules.

Photosynthesis plays a major role in the carbon cycle. Carbon dioxide moves between reservoirs at a steady pace, but changes in that flow can upset the balance. Because carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, more of it in the atmosphere can raise temperatures. Much of the extra carbon dioxide comes from burning fossil fuels, which returns ancient carbon to the air very quickly.

Forests and ocean algae help lower carbon dioxide levels, so deforestation is a serious concern in a changing climate. Scientists are also studying artificial photosynthesis as a way to make carbon-neutral biofuels. Like solar panels, these methods take energy from the sun and store it as chemical energy instead of electricity. Researchers have also used photosynthetic bacteria to make simple sugars, lactic acid, biodegradable plastics, and even medically useful compounds, including substances studied for cancer diagnosis and treatment.
