Extinction

O que os dinossauros, tigres da Tasmânia e poupas têm em comum? A resposta é o assunto do laboratório de hoje, a extinção. A extinção ocorre quando uma espécie não consegue sobreviver em seu ambiente para se reproduzir e não pode se mudar para um novo. Acredita-se que os mamutes lanosos, por exemplo, tenham morrido como resultado das mudanças climáticas, tornando seu habitat e o resto do planeta muito quentes. A extinção aconteceu desde que houve vida na Terra. Na verdade, estima-se que 99% de todas as espécies que já existiram foram extintas. 
A maioria dessas extinções aconteceu ao longo do tempo por causa de mudanças ambientais como nosso mamute lanoso. Mas outros fatores, como a competição por recursos com outras espécies e a incapacidade de evitar a predação, também podem levar uma espécie à extinção. Veja esses peixes, por exemplo. Durante esses eventos, altas taxas de extinção excedem as taxas de nova especiação, resultando em uma perda global de espécies. 
A extinção em massa mais conhecida é a extinção do Cretáceo-Paleógeno ou K-Pg, famosa por acabar com o reinado dos dinossauros. Essa extinção pode ser vista até mesmo nas camadas rochosas ou estratos da Terra, onde vemos uma perda abrupta de espécies do registro fóssil há cerca de 66 milhões de anos, o que também coincide com uma camada única de sedimentos contendo irídio, um metal raramente encontrado na crosta terrestre. O irídio está, no entanto, presente em grandes quantidades em asteróides, dando aos cientistas uma pista sobre a causa da extinção. O impacto na Península de Yucatán, no México, criou a cratera de Chicxulub, com 180 quilômetros de largura, e desencadeou uma série de eventos catastróficos que alterariam a Terra para sempre. Com o tempo, à medida que o clima da Terra lentamente voltou ao normal, as espécies restantes, que incluíam pequenos mamíferos, se recuperaram e sofreram radiação adaptativa para preencher as muitas espécies recém-desocupadas. <h4>A História da Vida na Terra</h4>
Fósseis de organismos que eram diferentes de qualquer coisa viva hoje foram documentados já no século 17, mas não foi até o início doséculo 19 que os cientistas começaram a reconhecer que as sucessivas camadas de rochas contendo fósseis eram como páginas sucessivas na história da vida na Terra. Embora esse reconhecimento tenha dado origem ao nascimento do campo da paleontologia, a ideia de extinção global completa de uma espécie ainda não havia sido totalmente aceita. Naquela época, ainda era viável argumentar que nosso conhecimento do mundo era limitado, portanto, os cientistas consideraram a possibilidade de que organismos conhecidos apenas por fósseis ainda pudessem viver em alguma parte inexplorada da Terra.
Quando Charles Darwin publicou "A Origem das Espécies" em 1859, o conceito de extinção de espécies estava se tornando mais aceito, mas a causa das extinções permanecia um mistério. A extinção contínua era parte integrante da teoria da seleção natural de Darwin, pois ele a via como um resultado lógico da evolução de espécies que eram mais competitivas, melhores predadores ou mais aptas do que seus ancestrais de outra maneira. Portanto, os ancestrais foram extintos para serem substituídos por seus descendentes superiores. A única ilustração que Darwin incluiu em seu livro é de uma árvore filogenética primitiva, à qual ele se referiu em várias ocasiões para apoiar seu argumento de que a extinção é um subproduto da evolução.
Todo organismo vivo vem à existência, prevalece por algum período de tempo e, eventualmente, perece. O mesmo vale para as espécies, portanto, o destino final de todas as espécies é a extinção. Uma espécie é extinta quando não pode mais sobreviver e se reproduzir em seu ambiente e não pode se mudar para um novo. Estima-se que mais de 99% de todas as espécies que já existiram foram extintas, com a maioria tendo uma "vida útil" média de 1 a 10 milhões de anos. A extinção pode ser gradual devido a mudanças ambientais lentas ou incapacidade de competir com uma espécie emergente, ou pode ser repentina devido a eventos catastróficos, destruição de habitat, poluição ou caça excessiva.
<h4>Extinção em grande escala</h4>
Extinções em massa, ou eventos de extinção, são grandes diminuições mundiais na biodiversidade, quando as taxas de extinção excedem as taxas de especiação. As extinções em massa são geralmente causadas por eventos geológicos ou astronômicos, como erupções vulcânicas, mudanças na composição atmosférica, aumento ou queda do nível do mar, resfriamento e aquecimento global e impactos de asteróides.
Cinco grandes eventos de extinção em massa foram identificados e usados para subdividir o tempo geológico em eras distintas ou períodos aninhados em eras. Quando várias espécies são extintas muito abruptamente, elas desaparecem do registro fóssil, fornecendo uma métrica para o fim de uma determinada subdivisão da escala de tempo geológico e o início de um novo período de tempo.
<h4>A extinção do Permiano-Triássico</h4>
A maior extinção em massa, a extinção do Permiano-Triássico, também conhecida como "A Grande Morte" ou "Desastre Permiano-Triássico" ocorreu há aproximadamente 252 milhões de anos, no final do período Permiano, levando mais de 90% de todas as espécies à extinção1. Outra extinção em massa bem conhecida é a extinção do Cretáceo-Paleógeno (K-Pg) ou Cretáceo-Terciário (KT), que ocorreu há aproximadamente 66 milhões de anos2. Embora a causa da extinção do K-Pg tenha sido amplamente debatida, o consenso se estabeleceu em um impacto de asteróide na Península de Yucatán, no México, como a causa mais importante do evento. Esse impacto maciço levou à instabilidade geológica em certas áreas, levando a terremotos, quantidades significativas de atividade vulcânica, bem como um aumento dramático do nível do mar. Além disso, também desencadeou grandes incêndios, que por sua vez encheram o ar com uma espessa camada de cinzas, fumaça e poeira, bloqueando o sol e levando a um período de resfriamento global.
O momento do impacto do asteróide segue as enormes erupções vulcânicas que causaram a formação das Armadilhas de Deccan, no centro-oeste da Índia. Essas erupções aconteceram em um intervalo de até 30.000 anos e começaram antes do impacto do asteróide. Eles causaram a maior formação vulcânica da Terra, que cobre uma área de mais de 200.000 milhas quadradas. Essas erupções também teriam causado mudanças climáticas sustentadas e, portanto, são vistas como uma causa alternativa ao impacto do asteróide ou um aumento das perturbações ambientais que se seguiram ao impacto.
<h4>Perda global de espécies</h4>
O evento K-Pg é mais famoso pela extinção dos dinossauros; no entanto, os dinossauros não foram os únicos táxons afetados - aproximadamente 75% de todas as espécies foram extintas durante este evento. No entanto, nem todos os táxons foram afetados igualmente, e alguns posteriormente se beneficiaram da abertura de nichos anteriormente ocupados2. Mamíferos e anfíbios faziam parte do último grupo. Embora a diversidade tenha sido perdida durante a extinção, esses dois táxons perderam diversidade a uma taxa menor do que muitos outros táxons e ambos os grupos sofreram uma radiação adaptativa após o desaparecimento de outros grandes tetrápodes, como os arcossauros. Dos arcossauros, apenas as linhagens que levaram a pássaros e crocodilos sobreviveram. Portanto, os dinossauros não aviários não são observados além do limite K-Pg no registro fóssil, e acredita-se que tenham morrido rápida e completamente devido à sua falta de capacidade de se abrigar e sua dependência de dietas carnívoras. O registro fóssil de insetos mostra grandes oscilações no início do Paleógeno. É possível que essa variação se deva à imperfeição do registro fóssil e alguns estágios foram mais propensos a preservar fósseis do que outros. Sabe-se também, no entanto, que os insetos experimentaram tendências semelhantes a outros táxons, diminuindo imediatamente após a extinção do K-Pg e depois se recuperando. Um ponto alto no Máximo Térmico também pode ser observado para este táxon. Osteichthyes, ou peixes ósseos, também experimentam um padrão irregular de diversidade. Fósseis marinhos de águas profundas, em particular, são difíceis de encontrar, o que pode contribuir para essa irregularidade, no entanto, vale ressaltar que a maior diversidade de peixes ósseos está no Máximo Térmico. Acredita-se que os mares rasos tenham experimentado os piores efeitos durante o evento de extinção devido ao maior impacto do aumento do nível do mar e à fotossíntese reduzida em comparação com outros habitats marinhos. Os moluscos experimentaram um enorme declínio após a extinção do K-Pg e esses números não são recuperados até o final do Paleógeno. Echinodermata e Crustacea experimentam níveis semelhantes de declínio, no entanto, esses números também podem ser afetados pela falta de estruturas fossilizantes em ambos os grupos.
Alguns cientistas sugeriram que entramos em uma nova era geológica conhecida como Antropoceno, junto com a "Sexta Extinção em Massa" 1-2. Essa sugestão é baseada nas mudanças globais, bem como na alta taxa de extinção global como resultado da atividade humana, incluindo caça excessiva, poluição, destruição de habitat, espécies invasoras e mudanças climáticas. Como a extinção atual é causada pela atividade humana, é diferente das outras extinções em massa, que resultaram em grande parte de processos astronômicos e geológicos. A taxa atual de extinção é até 100 vezes maior do que se espera que tenha sido sem influência humana e é provavelmente maior, considerando espécies que ainda não foram descobertas. Considerando que a taxa de extinção do Antropoceno é igual ou maior do que aquelas associadas aos eventos anteriores de extinção em massa, é necessária uma ação rápida para reverter as enormes perdas para populações vulneráveis.

mass extinction and the fossil record

Mass extinction is a major loss of species, and the fossil record shows how these events changed life on Earth. Fossils from different rock layers helped scientists see that life has a long history. In the early 19th century, that idea helped launch paleontology, the study of fossils and ancient life.

At first, many scientists did not fully accept that a species could disappear forever. They thought unknown organisms seen only in fossils might still live in unexplored places on Earth. By 1859, when Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, extinction was becoming more accepted, but its cause was still unclear. Darwin linked extinction to natural selection, where better-adapted species outcompete older ones and replace them over time.

A species goes extinct when it can no longer survive and reproduce in its environment and cannot move to a new one. Over 99% of species that have ever existed are estimated to have gone extinct. Most species last about 1 to 10 million years. Extinction can happen slowly because of environmental change or competition, or suddenly because of disasters, habitat loss, pollution, or overhunting.

Mass extinctions, also called extinction events, are global drops in biodiversity. They happen when extinction rates become higher than speciation rates, which is the rate at which new species form. These events are often linked to volcanic eruptions, changes in air composition, sea level changes, global cooling or warming, and asteroid impacts. Five major mass extinctions are recognized, and they help divide geologic time into eras and periods. When many species disappear at once, they also leave a clear signal in the fossil record.

The largest known mass extinction was the Permian-Triassic extinction, also called the Great Dying, about 252 million years ago. It happened at the end of the Permian Period and eliminated over 90% of species. Another famous event was the Cretaceous-Palaeogene, or K-Pg, extinction about 66 million years ago. Scientists now agree that a huge asteroid impact on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico was a major cause. The impact likely triggered earthquakes, major volcanic activity, and sea level rise, and it also caused fires that filled the air with ash, smoke, and dust. That blocked sunlight and led to global cooling.

The K-Pg event also came after the Deccan Traps eruptions in west-central India. These eruptions lasted as long as 30,000 years and formed the largest volcanic feature on Earth, covering more than 200,000 square miles. They likely added to long-term climate change. For that reason, some scientists view the eruptions as an alternative cause or as an added stress that worked with the asteroid impact.

The K-Pg extinction is best known for the loss of dinosaurs, but they were not the only group affected. About 75% of all species went extinct. Some groups later benefited when empty ecological niches opened up. Mammals and amphibians lost diversity at a lower rate than many other groups and then diversified after large tetrapods such as archosaurs declined. Among the archosaurs, only the lineages leading to birds and crocodiles survived. Non-avian dinosaurs do not appear above the K-Pg boundary in the fossil record, and they are thought to have died out quickly because they could not shelter well and depended on carnivorous diets.

Other groups also show the effect of the K-Pg event in different ways. Insects dropped after the extinction and then rebounded, although changes in fossil preservation may affect the pattern. Bony fish, or Osteichthyes, show an uneven diversity record, especially because deep-water fossils are hard to find. Shallow seas may have been hit hardest because sea level rise and reduced photosynthesis affected them more. Molluscs declined greatly and did not recover by the end of the Paleogene. Echinoderms and crustaceans also declined, although their fossil record may be affected by the lack of hard parts that fossilize easily.

Some scientists think Earth may now be entering the Anthropocene, along with a possible Sixth Mass Extinction. This idea is based on rapid global change and high extinction rates caused by human activity. Overhunting, pollution, habitat destruction, invasive species, and climate change all contribute. The current extinction rate may be up to 100 times higher than expected without human influence, and it could be even higher because many species have not yet been discovered. Because this rate is comparable to earlier mass extinctions, rapid action is needed to protect vulnerable populations.
