Community Diversity

Um ecossistema é uma comunidade de componentes vivos e não vivos que interagem em uma área. Podemos avaliar a biodiversidade usando uma medida chamada Índice de Shannon-Wiener, proposta por Claude Shannon e Norbert Wiener na década de 1940. O Índice de Shannon-Wiener é uma medida sem unidade, calculada como H. O índice utiliza duas variáveis: riqueza de espécies, ou o número de espécies presentes, indicado por K, e equitabilidade de espécies, ou proporção de cada espécie, indicada por PI. A riqueza de espécies é o número de espécies únicas em um ecossistema. Este exemplo tem sete. A uniformidade das espécies mede como as espécies em um ecossistema são distribuídas. Isso significa que um ecossistema em que as diferentes espécies têm números semelhantes é mais uniforme do que aquele em que uma ou duas espécies representam a maioria dos organismos, como este, relativamente invadidos por lebres. 

Agora que sabemos o que medir, vamos aprender a medir a biodiversidade. Como os ecossistemas podem ser enormes, os ecologistas tiveram que descobrir maneiras de amostrar aleatoriamente grandes áreas rapidamente. Essa limitação significa que algumas comunidades, especialmente as irregulares ou não uniformes, são mais bem amostradas por uma abordagem mais estruturada. <h4>Biodiversidade</h4>

O termo "saúde do ecossistema" é metafórico porque é difícil comparar a saúde de ecossistemas muito diferentes e não há um valor único que possa ser usado para quantificar a saúde de um ecossistema. Por exemplo, desertos e florestas têm diversidades de espécies muito diferentes, mas um não é necessariamente mais saudável que o outro. Portanto, várias métricas foram formuladas para representar a saúde de um ecossistema, e seu uso depende dos objetivos do estudo. Portanto, "saúde do ecossistema" pode se referir ao valor de um ecossistema para os seres humanos. O Índice de Shannon-Wiener requer duas medições de uma comunidade local: riqueza e uniformidade de espécies. Portanto, áreas com muitas espécies relativamente iguais em abundância têm as pontuações mais altas de biodiversidade.

Shannon-Wiener não é a única medida da biodiversidade e saúde do ecossistema. Por exemplo, um índice popular, denominado índice EPT, é usado para determinar a qualidade da água em sistemas fluviais, atribuindo valores de salubridade a organismos individuais. Mais especificamente, este índice considera três ordens de invertebrados sensíveis a poluentes encontrados em rios, Ephemeroptera (efeméridas), Plecoptera (moscas da pedra) e Trichoptera (caddisflies). A presença dessas espécies intolerantes a poluentes em um curso d'água é usada como uma indicação de boa qualidade da água e o ecossistema em questão é considerado saudável.

Muitas vezes, as áreas ecologicamente relevantes são muito grandes para serem amostradas na totalidade. Para resolver esse problema, os ecologistas coletam amostras de várias parcelas menores em toda a área de estudo usando quadrados, que são pequenos quadros de tamanho predeterminado colocados em pontos do local de estudo, nos quais um pesquisador identifica e registra todos os indivíduos de espécies de interesse. Quando amostras quadradas suficientes são consideradas, os cientistas podem extrapolar para fazer estimativas precisas das comunidades ecológicas.

<h4>Impactos das mudanças ecológicas</h4>

A maioria das mudanças ecológicas naturais acontece em uma escala de tempo prolongada. Além disso, os humanos continuam a alterar os ecossistemas. Para avaliar as mudanças de longo prazo nos ecossistemas, os cientistas criaram locais de Pesquisa Ecológica de Longo Prazo (LTERs). Um dos LTERs mais antigos é a Floresta Experimental Hubbard Brook, localizada em New Hampshire, Estados Unidos. Este site e outros aumentaram o conhecimento sobre os padrões de escala do ecossistema resultantes do desmatamento, mudanças nos regimes hidrológicos e outros distúrbios ecológicos de longo prazo1.

Quando uma grande mudança ocorre muito rapidamente, ela é chamada de distúrbio ecológico. Incêndios, furacões e inundações são exemplos de distúrbios ecológicos. Os distúrbios podem alterar um ecossistema, eliminando nutrientes e alterando a composição da comunidade biológica. Após uma perturbação, as espécies mais resistentes e resilientes são favorecidas para a sobrevivência. Uma espécie ou comunidade resistente é aquela que pode sobreviver a grandes distúrbios com prejuízos mínimos e se recuperar rapidamente de uma perturbação, como dentes-de-leão depois que um gramado é cortado. A amostragem de um local por muitos anos antes e depois dos distúrbios é inviável, mas comparar diferentes áreas com diferentes regimes de distúrbios oferece uma solução parcial para esse problema.

Habitats perturbados são geralmente irregulares; portanto, o uso de quadrados colocados aleatoriamente pode resultar em sub-representação de espécies e estimativas incorretas de biodiversidade. Por isso, é fundamental considerar o entorno e algumas das características do habitat que está sendo estudado. Isso é realizado na ecologia da paisagem, estudando os habitats centrais e de borda. Uma maneira de restaurar ecossistemas fortemente alterados é por meio da biorremediação, que envolve a liberação de organismos biológicos, geralmente microrganismos, para decompor poluentes e restaurar características favoráveis a um ecossistema3. Um exemplo disso é a liberação de microrganismos nas águas residuais para quebrar a poluição e restaurar a condição habitável da água para os peixes4. Portanto, formas inventivas de restaurar ecossistemas se tornarão cada vez mais importantes para remediar os efeitos humanos nos ecossistemas.

measuring ecosystem health

Ecosystem health is measured by looking at how species, habitats, and nonliving conditions interact in the same area. An ecological community includes many populations that live together and affect one another. When biotic parts, or living parts, also interact with abiotic parts, or nonliving parts, they form an ecosystem. These systems can be very small, like microbes in the human digestive tract, or very large, like a forest linked by the carbon cycle.

Ecologists study ecosystem health because urbanization and climate change are changing ecosystems around the world. A change in one part of an ecosystem can affect other connected parts. That can lead to major shifts in the whole system. Because of this, scientists want to measure and predict the current and future health of ecosystems.

There is no single way to measure ecosystem health. The term is metaphorical, and different ecosystems are not easy to compare directly. A desert and a forest may have very different species diversity, but one is not automatically healthier than the other. Researchers use different metrics based on the goal of the study. Some look at ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration by trees or pollination by bees. Others measure rare species, fire resistance, or other biotic and abiotic factors.

One common measure is biodiversity, or biological diversity. Biodiversity describes the variety of species in an area and can be calculated with the Shannon-Wiener biodiversity index. This index uses two measurements: species richness and evenness. Species richness is the total number of different species in a local community. A freshly paved parking lot would have a richness of 0, while a rainforest would have a much higher richness. Evenness matters too. If one species dominates and the others are rare, biodiversity is lower than in a community where species are more evenly abundant.

Another health measure is the EPT index, which is used in river systems to check water quality. EPT stands for Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera, which are mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies. These invertebrates are sensitive to pollution, so finding them in a waterway is a sign of good water quality. In that case, the ecosystem is considered healthy.

Ecologists often cannot sample a large habitat all at once. To solve this, they use quadrats, which are small frames of a set size placed at different points in the study area. Inside each quadrat, a researcher identifies and records the species of interest. With enough samples, scientists can estimate the ecological community more accurately.

Ecological change can happen slowly over many years or quickly as a disturbance. Fires, hurricanes, and floods are examples of disturbances. They can remove nutrients and change the makeup of the biological community. Afterward, the most resistant and resilient species are more likely to survive. A resistant species can handle major disturbance with little harm and recover quickly, like dandelions after a lawn is mowed.

To study long-term change, scientists use Long Term Ecological Research sites, or LTERs. The Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire is one of the longest running examples. These sites have helped scientists understand long-term patterns linked to deforestation, changes in water flow, and other major disturbances. Since it is not practical to sample the same site for many years before and after every event, researchers also compare areas with different disturbance histories.

Disturbed habitats are often patchy, so random quadrats can miss important species and give poor biodiversity estimates. Ecologists also study landscape patterns by comparing core habitats and edge habitats. A core habitat is found in the middle of a patch. An edge habitat, or boundary habitat, borders a different habitat type. For example, where a forest meets a meadow, biodiversity may be higher because species from both habitats can be present. These changes are called edge effects, and they are often measured with transects, or paths across the habitat, where small sampling sites are recorded at set intervals.

Not every edge shows an edge effect. Some edge species are invasive and can live in many habitat types, so they may not indicate a healthy ecosystem. Scientists also measure chemical features of ecosystems, such as pollution levels or soil nutrients. These data help explain biodiversity patterns in different parts of a community. Other variables, including temperature, precipitation over time, and species traits, can be harder to measure and may require advanced statistical analysis.

To study ecosystems across large areas and long time scales, ecologists are using remote sensing. This method uses satellite images to estimate variables across the globe. The data often require multivariate statistics and other complex math tools that are still being improved. As people continue to change ecosystems worldwide, conservation and restoration have become increasingly important. One restoration method is bioremediation, which uses biological organisms, usually microorganisms, to break down pollutants and restore favorable ecosystem traits. In wastewater, for example, microorganisms can help remove pollution and make the water habitable for fish.
