Cohesion

Coesão é a tendência para o mesmo tipo de moléculas ficarem juntas. A água é um exemplo clássico. Múltiplas moléculas formam gotículas como elas são atraídas de forma coesiva por ligações de hidrogénio.Conforme as gotas se acumulam, algumas moléculas na superfície são expostas ao ar. Dada a falta de substâncias adequadas para se ligarem a nesta interface, a água irá ser mais atraída por si mesma criando uma atração para dentro. Essa atração acumula muitas ligações gerando uma superfície que é capaz de resistir à rutura em situações de estresse, um fenômeno chamado de tensão superficial.Consequentemente, pequenos objetos podem andar na água contanto que eles não quebrem as forças coesivas em jogo.

coesão

A coesão é a atração entre moléculas do mesmo tipo - como moléculas de água. O oxigénio com carga parcialmente negativa de uma molécula de água liga-se ao hidrogénio de carga parcialmente positiva de uma segunda molécula de água através de ligações de hidrogénio. Cada molécula de água pode formar até quatro ligações de hidrogénio com outras moléculas de água.
 
 Em uma superfície, quando várias moléculas de água se unem através da coesão, forma-se uma gotícula. A água normalmente não se espalha pela superfície. Isso ocorre porque as moléculas de água são mais atraídas umas pelas outras do que por moléculas que compõem a superfície ou o ar circundante.
 
 A tensão superficial resulta da coesão. Os alfaiates, também conhecidos como aranhas-de-água, são insetos que usam esse fenómeno para andar sobre a água. A tensão superficial ocorre na interface entre a água e o ar (ou seja, a superfície da água). Mais uma vez, as moléculas de água são mais atraídas umas pelas outras do que por moléculas no ar. Assim, as moléculas de água à superfície formam ligações com moléculas de água vizinhas ao seu lado e por baixo. Uma vez que as moléculas de água à superfície não podem formar ligações com outras moléculas de água de um dos lados (o lado próximo do ar), elas formam ligações mais fortes com suas moléculas de água vizinhas. As moléculas fortemente ligadas têm uma área de superfície compactada, criando gotículas esféricas de moléculas de água. A alta tensão superficial da água e a flutuação das patas do alfaiate permitem que o inseto permaneça à superfície da água.
 
 O mercúrio é outra molécula coesa que pode ser facilmente vista. Em um recipiente de vidro, o mercúrio não se espalha nem molha o vidro, porque as forças coesas entre as moléculas de mercúrio são mais fortes do que as forças adesivas entre o mercúrio e o vidro. Embora a água seja altamente coesa, também tem afinidade com a sílica. Assim, a água dispersa-se uniformemente no fundo de um recipiente de vidro.

Water molecules stick to each other through cohesion. Water is neutral overall, but it is a polar molecule. The oxygen atom in one water molecule has a partial negative charge, and it can bind with a hydrogen atom that has a partial positive charge in another water molecule. This forms a hydrogen bond. Each water molecule can form up to four hydrogen bonds with other water molecules, and these bonds give water its cohesive nature.

Cohesion helps water form droplets on a surface. Water does not usually spread out because the water molecules are more attracted to each other than to the surface or the air around them. The attraction between water molecules at the surface and the bulk water is called surface tension, and it comes from cohesion. At the water-air boundary, surface molecules can only make hydrogen bonds beside and below them. That limited bonding creates a compressed surface area and spherical droplets.

Surface tension is strong enough to support pond skaters, also called water striders. These insects use the surface of water to walk across it. Their buoyant legs and the high surface tension of water help them stay on top of the water.

Mercury is another cohesive liquid. In a glass container, mercury stays in spherical droplets because the cohesive forces between mercury molecules are stronger than the adhesive forces between mercury and glass. Water is also highly cohesive, but it has an affinity for silica, which is a main component of glass. Because of that, water spreads evenly at the bottom of a glass container.
