Consideremos dois recipientes com diferentes níveis de líquidos. Quando ligado, o líquido flui do nível mais alto para o nível inferior. Mediante a medição dos níveis individuais dos líquidos, a direção do fluxo pode ser previsto.Comparativamente, numa célula galvânica, conhecer os potenciais de elétrodos individuais ajuda a prever o oxidante, o redutor e o fluxo dos eletróns. Aqui, cada meia-célula tem o seu potencial elétrodo correspondente. No entanto, o potencial individual do elétrodo não pode ser medido diretamente, mas apenas a diferença potencial entre as duas meias-células.Então, como é calculado, para determinar o potencial individual dos elétrodos, é atribuído a um elétrodo um potencial de zero, e os outros potenciais do elétrodo são medidos em relação a ele. O elétrodo com um potencial de zero é o elétrodo de hidrogénio sob condições de estado padrão, também chamado de elétrodo de hidrogénio padrão, ou EHP. O EHP é operado a 25 graus Celsius, constituído por um elétrodo de platina inerte parcialmente submerso em 1 molar de ácido clorídrico e exposto ao fluxo de gás de hidrogénio a 1 atmosfera.Quando um elétrodo de zinco está ligado ao EHP, a sua massa reduz-se, indicando a sua oxidação a íons Zn2+O aumento simultâneo da produção de hidrogénio gasoso significa uma redução de íons de hidrogénio. Assim, o zinco é o anodo, e o EHP o catódico. O potencial do elétrodo padrão de zinco de 0, 76 V indica um maior potencial oxidativo do que o EHP.No entanto, quando um elétrodo de cobre está ligado ao EHP, a sua massa aumenta à medida que o Cu2+é reduzido a cobre. Assim, o cobre é o catódico, e o EHP o anodo. O potencial de redução padrão do cobre de 0, 34 V indica um maior potencial redutor do que o EHP.Os potenciais de elétrodos padrão fornecem uma medida para as oxidações ou reduções ocorrem quanto mais positivo, maior a tendência para uma redução sob condições normais. A direção e a espontaneidade de uma reação redox são determinadas através da verificação dos potenciais dos elétrodos padrão individuais. Uma soma positiva dos potenciais dos elétrodos implica uma reação espontânea.Assim, para uma célula galvânica de cobre-zinco onde o zinco é o anodo e o cobre é o cátodo e um potencial celular de 1, 10 V, ambas as reações das meias células ocorrem espontaneamente na direção avançada. Finalmente, o potencial do elétrodo padrão é uma propriedade intrínseca e não afetada por qualquer alteração na estequiometria da meia reação.

Ao comparar a reatividade da prata com o chumbo, observa-se que as duas espécies iónicas, Ag+ (aq) e Pb2+ (aq), apresentam uma diferença na reatividade redox em relação ao cobre: o ião de prata sofre redução espontânea, enquanto que o ião de chumbo não. Essa atividade redox relativa pode ser facilmente quantificada em células eletroquímicas por uma propriedade chamada potencial celular. Potencial Padrão de Elétrodo
Quando medido para fins eletroquímicos, o potencial celular é uma medida da força motriz para um tipo específico de processos de transferência de carga, ou seja, a transferência de eletrões entre reagentes. O potencial de um único elétrodo ou de uma única semi-célula não pode ser medido uma vez que a transferência de eletrões requer um doador e um receptor ou um redutor e um oxidante, respectivamente. Em vez disso, um potencial de semi-célula só pode ser medido em relação a outra semi-célula. Assim, só é possível medir a diferença de potencial entre duas semi-células, Ecell, que é definida como

Para calcular facilmente potenciais de meia-reação, a comunidade científica designou uma semi-célula específica para servir como referência universal para todas as medições de potencial celular, com potencial de 0 V. O potencial do elétrodo (EX) para uma semi-célula X é então definido como o potencial medido para uma célula X, que actua como um cátodo, enquanto que SHE actua como ânodo.

Em condições de estado padrão, o potencial da semi-célula X é igual ao potencial padrão do elétrodo, E°X. Como a definição de potencial celular requer que as semi-células funcionem como cátodos, esses potenciais também são chamados de potenciais padrão de redução.
Previsão da Espontaneidade e Direção de uma Reação Redox
Os potenciais das células e dos eléctrodos ditam a espontaneidade das reações redox. Observa-se que as reações espontâneas mostram um potencial celular positivo, enquanto que o processo não espontâneo mostra um potencial celular negativo. Se a soma dos potenciais dos elétrodos for positiva, a reação será espontânea. Reações de semi-célula com potencial de elétrodo positivo ocorrem na direção direta, enquanto que aquelas com valores menores que o elétrodo de hidrogénio geralmente ocorrem na ordem inversa.
Um oxidante mais forte apresenta um maior potencial padrão de elétrodo, E°. Como os potenciais de elétrodos medem a capacidade de redução, um aumento de E° corresponde a uma força motriz maior por trás da redução da espécie e melhores habilidades oxidantes. Assim, E°cell é positivo quando E°cátodo > E°ânodo.
Considerando isto, é explicado porque o cobre é oxidado pela prata, mas não pelo chumbo:

Previsão da Dissolução de Metal em Ácidos Minerais
Uma das aplicações essenciais dos potenciais de semi-células é compreender se um determinado metal se dissolverá em ácido mineral. A maioria dos ácidos, como o ácido clorídrico, dissolve metais através da redução de protões para hidrogénio gasoso e oxidação de metais para os respectivos iões. No caso do zinco a reagir com ácido clorídrico, a reação é espontânea, uma vez que o potencial padrão do elétrodo de zinco é inferior ao do hidrogénio. No entanto, o cobre não reage com o ácido clorídrico devido ao seu potencial de elétrodo mais elevado.

Standard Electrode Potentials

Electrode potentials help predict whether a redox reaction will happen on its own. A redox reaction involves electron transfer. In electrochemistry, the measured value is called cell potential or cell voltage. It shows the energy linked to charge transfer and is measured in volts, where 1 volt equals 1 joule per coulomb.

A single half-cell cannot be measured by itself because electron transfer needs both a donor and a receiver. For that reason, scientists measure the difference between two half-cells. The cell potential, Ecell, is defined from the cathode and anode potentials, and the standard cell potential, E°cell, is taken under standard conditions of 1 M concentration, 1 bar pressure, and 298 K.

To compare half-cells, chemistry uses the standard hydrogen electrode, or SHE, as a zero-volt reference. The SHE uses an inert platinum electrode in 1 M aqueous H+ with hydrogen gas bubbling at 1 bar and 298 K. A half-cell X is measured against the SHE when X acts as the cathode. Under standard conditions, this gives the standard electrode potential, E°X. These values are also called standard reduction potentials because the half-cell is written as a reduction.

The sign of the potential helps show the direction of a redox reaction. A spontaneous reaction has a positive cell potential, while a nonspontaneous one has a negative cell potential. When the sum of the electrode potentials is positive, the reaction is spontaneous. Half-cell reactions with positive electrode potential tend to go forward, and reactions with values below the hydrogen electrode usually go in reverse. A stronger oxidant has a larger standard electrode potential because it has a greater drive to gain electrons.

This idea explains why silver ions and lead ions behave differently toward copper. Silver ion, Ag+ (aq), is reduced spontaneously, but lead ion, Pb2+ (aq), is not. It also helps explain metal dissolution in mineral acids such as hydrochloric acid. These acids dissolve metals by reducing protons to hydrogen gas and oxidizing the metal to its ions. Zinc reacts spontaneously with hydrochloric acid because its standard electrode potential is lower than hydrogen’s, while copper does not react because its electrode potential is higher.
