The First Law of Thermodynamics

A primeira lei da termodinâmica, também conhecida como lei da conservação de energia, afirma que a energia é sempre conservada. Isso significa que a energia não pode ser criada ou destruída; no entanto, a energia pode ser transferida entre objetos ou convertida de uma forma de energia para outra.
Na termodinâmica, o universo é dividido em duas partes. A matéria ou região em estudo é o sistema, e tudo o que não seja o sistema é o ambiente.
Calor e trabalho são duas formas de transferência de energia entre o sistema e o ambiente.
A transmissão de energia térmica é chamada de calor. Quando o calor flui do ambiente para a membrana celular, o movimento das moléculas na membrana torna-se mais fluido, semelhante ao derretimento do gelo.
A transmissão de energia mecânica é chamada de trabalho. Mudanças no comprimento dos filamentos do citoesqueleto geram forças que podem ser transmitidas como energia mecânica para empurrar ou puxar a membrana celular.

Em outras palavras, sempre existiu e sempre existirá exatamente a mesma quantidade de energia no universo. A energia existe em muitas formas diferentes. De acordo com a primeira lei da termodinâmica, a energia pode ser transferida de um lugar para outro ou transformar-se em diferentes formas, mas não pode ser criada ou destruída. As transferências e transformações de energia ocorrem ao nosso redor o tempo todo. As lâmpadas transformam energia elétrica em energia luminosa. Os fogões a gás transformam a energia química do gás natural em energia térmica. As plantas realizam uma das transformações de energia mais biologicamente úteis da Terra: a conversão da energia solar em energia química armazenada nas moléculas orgânicas. 

 O desafio para todos os organismos vivos é obter energia do seu ambiente em formas que possam transferir ou transformar em energia utilizável para realizar trabalho. As células vivas evoluíram muito bem para enfrentar esse desafio. A energia química armazenada nas moléculas orgânicas, como açúcares e gorduras, transforma-se através de uma série de reações químicas celulares em energia nas moléculas de ATP. A energia nas moléculas de ATP é facilmente acessível para realizar trabalho. Exemplos dos tipos de trabalho que as células precisam realizar incluem a construção de moléculas complexas, o transporte de materiais, a ativação do movimento de batimento dos cílios ou flagelos, a contração das fibras musculares para criar movimento e a reprodução.

The first law of thermodynamics describes how energy changes form in the universe. The total amount of energy stays constant. Energy can move from one place to another or change into a different form, but it cannot be created or destroyed.

These energy changes happen in everyday life. A light bulb changes electrical energy into light energy. A gas stove changes chemical energy in natural gas into heat energy. Plants also carry out a major energy transformation when they convert sunlight energy into the chemical energy stored in organic molecules.

Living organisms must take in energy from their surroundings in forms they can use. Cells handle this by changing chemical energy in sugars and fats through a series of chemical reactions into energy stored in ATP molecules. ATP is a molecule that cells can use easily to do work. That work includes building complex molecules, moving materials, powering cilia or flagella, contracting muscle fibers, and supporting reproduction.
