Enthalpy within the Cell

A energia interna, ou E, é a energia contida dentro de um sistema, como a energia contida nas ligações químicas e o movimento aleatório de suas partículas. Um sistema e seus arredores podem transferir energia entre eles.
A mudança na energia interna de um sistema, delta E, é igual à soma de q, o calor total transferido para o sistema, e w, o trabalho total realizado no sistema.
Na maioria das reações bioquímicas, nenhum trabalho é realizado; portanto, a mudança na energia interna é equivalente a outra função termodinâmica chamada entalpia.
A mudança na entalpia de um sistema ou ∆H é acompanhada por uma mudança igual e oposta na entalpia do ambiente.
Um processo exotérmico é quando o sistema libera calor para o ambiente e é representado por uma entalpia negativa. Um processo endotérmico é quando o sistema ganha calor, representado por uma entalpia positiva.
As células vivas são sistemas abertos que trocam matéria e energia com o ambiente, por meio de processos exotérmicos e endotérmicos, seguindo a primeira lei da termodinâmica.

A entalpia (H) é usada para descrever a termodinâmica de processos químicos e físicos. A entalpia é definida como a soma da energia interna de um sistema (U) e o produto matemático de sua pressão (P) e volume (V): H = U + PV 

 A entalpia também é uma função de estado. Os valores de entalpia para substâncias específicas não podem ser medidos diretamente; apenas mudanças de entalpia para processos químicos ou físicos podem ser determinadas. Para processos que ocorrem a pressão constante (uma condição comum para muitas alterações químicas e físicas), a variação de entalpia (ΔH) é: ΔH = ΔU + PΔV 

 O calor liberado quando você opera um queimador de Bunsen é igual à variação de entalpia da reação de combustão do metano que ocorre, uma vez que ocorre à pressão essencialmente constante da atmosfera. Um valor negativo de uma mudança de entalpia, ΔH < 0, indica uma reação exotérmica; um valor positivo, ΔH > 0, indica uma reação endotérmica. 

 O ΔH e a variação da energia livre, denominada delta G (∆G), estão relacionados pela seguinte equação, conhecida como equação de Gibbs Helmholtz; 
 ΔG = ΔH − TΔS 

 Geralmente calculamos condições padrão de pH, temperatura e pressão em pH 7,0 em sistemas biológicos, 25 graus Celsius e 100 quilopascais (1 bar), respectivamente. Observe que as condições celulares variam consideravelmente dessas condições padrão e, portanto, os valores padrão de ∆G calculados para reações biológicas serão diferentes dentro da célula.

Cellular enthalpy describes how heat and energy change during chemical and physical processes. Enthalpy is written as H and is defined as the sum of a system’s internal energy, U, and the product of pressure and volume, PV. It is a state function, which means its value depends on the state of the system, not the path taken.

Scientists cannot measure the enthalpy of a single substance directly. They can determine enthalpy changes, or ΔH, for a process instead. For reactions or changes that occur at constant pressure, which is common in many chemical and physical processes, ΔH equals ΔU + PΔV.

A simple example is the heat released when a Bunsen burner burns methane. That heat is equal to the enthalpy change of the combustion reaction because the reaction happens at essentially constant atmospheric pressure. A negative ΔH means the reaction is exothermic, while a positive ΔH means it is endothermic.

Enthalpy also connects to free energy through the Gibbs-Helmholtz equation, ΔG = ΔH − TΔS. In biology, standard conditions are usually pH 7.0, 25 degrees Celsius, and 100 kilopascals, or 1 bar. Cellular conditions often differ from these standards, so standard calculated ΔG values for biological reactions can change inside the cell.
