As aminas são derivados orgânicos de um composto inorgânico - amônia, com um ou mais hidrogênios sendo substituídos por grupos alquil ou arila.
Eles são classificados como aminas primárias, secundárias ou terciárias com base no grau de substituição no átomo de nitrogênio.
Se o átomo de nitrogênio estiver ligado a um ou mais carbonos alquil, a amina é classificada como amina alifática. Se um dos carbonos ligados faz parte de um grupo arila, a amina é uma amina aromática.

As aminas são derivados orgânicos da amônia. Elas são formados pela substituição de um ou mais prótons de amônia por grupos alquil ou arila. Dependendo do número de grupos orgânicos ligados ao nitrogênio, as aminas são classificadas como primárias, secundárias ou terciárias. As aminas primárias têm um grupo orgânico ligado ao átomo de nitrogênio, enquanto as aminas secundárias e terciárias têm dois e três grupos orgânicos ligados ao átomo de nitrogênio, respectivamente.

Amines are organic derivatives of ammonia. They form when one or more ammonia protons are replaced by alkyl or aryl groups. Chemists sort amines by the number of organyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom.

Primary amines have one organyl group on nitrogen. Secondary amines have two, and tertiary amines have three. If a fourth organyl group is present, the nitrogen carries a formal positive charge. These compounds are called quaternary ammonium salts.

Amines are also grouped as aliphatic or aromatic. An amine is aliphatic when only alkyl groups are bonded to the nitrogen atom. In an aromatic amine, at least one aryl group is bonded to nitrogen. If the nitrogen atom is part of a ring, the amine is classified as a heterocyclic amine.

Some heterocyclic amines are further divided by the type of ring they belong to. If nitrogen is the heteroatom in an aliphatic ring, the compound is a heterocyclic aliphatic amine. If nitrogen is part of an aromatic ring, it is a heterocyclic aromatic amine.

Many nitrogen-containing molecules from plants are called alkaloids. Most of these are physiologically active in the human body. Coniine is one example of a heterocyclic aliphatic amine, and ingestion can cause respiratory issues, weakness, or death in severe cases. Cocaine is a tertiary amine from coca plant leaves, and it stimulates the central nervous system when consumed.
