Anatomical Terminology

A terminologia anatômica padrão é universalmente usada para estudar a estrutura e a organização interna do corpo humano.
Esses termos geralmente têm raízes, prefixos ou sufixos derivados do grego ou do latim. A raiz é a parte central da palavra que pode se referir a um órgão, tecido ou condição. 
Por exemplo, a raiz gastro-refere-se ao estômago. Adicionar epi, ou seja, acima, como um prefixo antes da raiz cria o termo epigástrico, que descreve a localização acima do estômago.
O sufixo refere-se à inflamação. Ligá-lo é à raiz artro-, ou seja, articulações, forma o termo artrite. Da mesma forma, bronquite e gastrite significam inflamação de uma parte dos pulmões e do estômago, respectivamente.
Da mesma forma, para entender as direções anatômicas, os anatomistas usam a posição de referência anatômica padrão. Por exemplo, quando uma pessoa está em pé voltada para a frente, a frente do corpo é chamada de lado anterior ou ventral, e as costas são o lado posterior ou dorsal.
Assim, o coração é anterior à coluna vertebral e posterior ao esterno.

Anatomistas e profissionais de saúde utilizam uma terminologia padronizada para descrever o corpo humano com maior precisão e sem ambiguidade. Os termos anatômicos têm raízes derivadas principalmente do grego e do latim. Como essas línguas raramente são utilizadas em conversas, o significado das palavras permanece o mesmo. Cada termo é composto por uma raiz que fica entre os prefixos e sufixos. A raiz de um termo geralmente se refere a um órgão, tecido ou condição, enquanto o prefixo ou sufixo geralmente descrevem a raiz. Por exemplo, no distúrbio hipertensão, o prefixo "hiper" significa "alto" ou "acima" e a palavra raiz "tensão" se refere à pressão, então a palavra "hipertensão" se refere à pressão arterial anormalmente alta.

Os anatomistas padronizam a maneira como veem o corpo. A posição de referência anatômica padrão é em pé, com os pés paralelos, os ombros abertos e os dedos dos pés apontando para frente. Os membros superiores são mantidos do lado do corpo com as palmas das mãos voltadas para frente. Utilizar a posição de referência anatômica padrão para localizar ou se referir a partes do corpo minimiza possíveis confusões, especialmente durante exames e procedimentos de rotina. Por exemplo, uma cicatriz no carpo está no lado da palma do pulso. Quanto à orientação, o corpo deitado é descrito como estando na posição prona (de bruços) ou supina (de barriga para cima).

Além disso, as regiões do corpo humano possuem termos específicos para indicar a localização, número ou cor de determinada estrutura, órgão ou tecido. Por exemplo, o termo "braquium" se refere ao "braço superior" e "antebraquium" ou "antebraço" é usado em vez de "braço inferior". Os termos se tornam essenciais ao descrever as localizações relativas de diferentes estruturas do corpo. Por exemplo, os termos superior e inferior são frequentemente utilizados para descrever a posição da cabeça em relação à parte inferior do corpo.

Breve histórico

A Terminologia Anatomica (TA) é o padrão internacional em terminologia anatômica humana que é utilizado em todo o mundo. O Comitê Federativo de Terminologia Anatômica e a Federação Internacional das Associações Anatômicas a desenvolveram e lançaram em 1998. Ela substituiu o padrão anterior, o Nomina Anatomica. A Terminologia Histologica (TH) é um texto complementar da TA que foi desenvolvido pelo Comitê Federativo Internacional de Terminologia Anatômica (FICAT) e que foi publicado em 2008. Anatomical terms help describe the human body clearly in biology and medicine. Health care professionals and anatomists use this standard language to avoid confusion and to make descriptions more precise. Most anatomical words come from Greek and Latin roots, and these roots usually stay the same because the languages are rarely used in everyday conversation.

Many anatomical words are built from a root plus a prefix or suffix. The root often names an organ, tissue, or condition. The prefix or suffix then changes the meaning of that root. For example, in hypertension, the prefix &quot;hyper-&quot; means high or over, and the root &quot;tension&quot; refers to pressure. Together, the word means abnormally high blood pressure.

Anatomists also use a standard anatomical reference position to describe the body. In this position, a person stands upright with parallel feet, shoulders wide, toes forward, and the arms at the sides. The palms face ahead. Using this common position helps people locate body parts with less confusion during exams and procedures.

Orientation terms also matter when describing body position. A body lying face down is called prone, and a body lying face up is called supine. Location terms are used for specific regions as well. For example, brachium means upper arm, and antebrachium means forearm rather than lower arm. A scar on the carpal is on the palm side of the wrist, and terms such as superior and inferior help compare the head with the lower part of the body.

These terms are part of international standards used worldwide. Terminologia Anatomica, or TA, was developed by the Federative Committee on Anatomical Terminology and the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists and released in 1998. It replaced Nomina Anatomica. A related reference, Terminologia Histologica, or TH, was published in 2008 by the renamed Federative International Committee on Anatomical Terminology. TA covers about 7,500 gross anatomical structures, while TH covers cellular structures, tissue, and organs at the microscopic level.
