DC Generator

Um gerador DC converte energia mecânica em energia elétrica DC. A construção básica do gerador DC é semelhante à do alternador simples, exceto que os dois anéis coletores são substituídos por um único anel dividido.
À medida que a alça condutora gira em um campo magnético uniforme, o fluxo magnético através da alça muda senoidalmente, resultando em fem induzida.
Aqui, o anel dividido atua como um comutador. O comutador troca os contatos para cada meia rotação do loop, garantindo a mesma polaridade para a fem induzida.
Semelhante a um alternador, a fem induzida é zero quando o fluxo magnético é máximo ou mínimo.

Um alternador converte energia mecânica em energia elétrica que varia sinusoidalmente, resultando em corrente alternada (AC). Por sua vez, um gerador DC converte energia mecânica em energia elétrica, que são pulsos DC com a mesma polaridade. A construção de um gerador DC é semelhante à de um alternador, exceto que o par de anéis coletores é substituído por um único anel dividido, também chamado de comutador. O comutador funciona como um interruptor rotativo periódico; ele altera os contatos com as escovas a cada meia rotação da alça condutora, garantindo que a fem induzida tenha sempre a mesma polaridade.

O princípio básico de funcionamento dos geradores DC é baseado na lei de indução de Faraday. A DC generator makes electrical energy from mechanical motion. It produces DC pulses with the same polarity, unlike an alternator, which gives sinusoidal AC current. The two machines have similar construction, but a DC generator uses a single split ring instead of a pair of slip rings.

That split ring is called a commutator. It works like a rotary switch that changes the contact with the brushes after each half turn of the conducting loop. This action keeps the induced emf at the same polarity, even as the loop keeps rotating.

The generator works by Faraday’s law of induction. A conducting loop turns inside a uniform magnetic field, so the magnetic flux through the loop changes over time. When the loop is connected to an external circuit, that changing flux induces an emf and then an induced current.

The commutator and brushes provide the link to the external circuit. The induced emf is largest when the magnetic flux through the loop is zero. It is smallest when the magnetic flux is at its maximum or minimum. The magnetic flux can change between positive and negative values, but the induced emf stays positive and varies between zero and a maximum value.

The average induced emf is found by averaging the sinusoidal part of the signal. Its size can be increased by making the uniform magnetic field stronger, increasing the area of the conducting loop, or increasing the angular velocity of rotation.
