Quando um sal se dissolve na água, o cátion e o ânion se dissociam. Cada íon atrai íons da carga oposta devido à atração eletrostática.

A eficácia da blindagem da atmosfera iônica está relacionada à força iônica, que é determinada pela concentração e carga dos íons.
Formalmente simbolizada como I, a força iônica de uma solução incorpora a concentração total de todos os íons na solução e é proporcional à concentração molar do sal.
Como a carga do íon é elevada ao quadrado no cálculo, quanto maior a carga de um íon, mais significativa é sua contribuição para o valor da força iônica.
Por exemplo, a força iônica de uma solução de nitrato de potássio é a mesma que sua concentração.
No entanto, as forças iônicas das soluções de sulfato de potássio, um eletrólito 2:1, e sulfato de cálcio, um eletrólito 2:2, são três e quatro vezes suas concentrações, respectivamente.

A força iônica de uma solução é uma forma quantitativa de expressar a concentração total de eletrólitos de uma solução. Esse conceito foi introduzido pela primeira vez em 1921 por dois físico-químicos americanos, Gilbert N. Lewis e Merle Randall, ao descrever o coeficiente de atividade de eletrólitos fortes. Durante o cálculo da força iônica (I ou μ), todos os cátions e ânions é considerados. Porém, a concentração (c) de um íon com maior número de carga (z) tem uma contribuição maior para a força iônica total porque a carga do íon é elevada ao quadrado.

Ao calcular a força iônica de um sal que produzirá múltiplos equivalentes do mesmo íon na dissociação, precisamos levar em conta a contribuição de cada íon. Por exemplo, a força iônica de 0,1 mol/L Na2SO4 pode ser calculada da seguinte forma:

A concentração de Na+ é 0,2 mol/L porque uma molécula de Na2SO4 se dissocia para fornecer dois íons Na+ em solução. A força iônica de soluções diluídas pode ser facilmente calculada. Porém, em uma solução mais concentrada, o cálculo torna-se mais complexo e menos preciso, pois os sais não se dissociam completamente. Por exemplo, em uma solução aquosa de 0,025 mol/L de MgSO4, 25% a 35% de MgSO4 existe como o par de íons MgSO4(aq).

O conceito de força iônica pode ser estendido a ácidos fortes e fracos. Como os ácidos fortes se dissociam completamente em solução, suas forças iônicas podem ser calculadas da mesma forma que as dos sais dissociados. Para ácidos fracos, a concentração de espécies ionizadas pode ser calculada a partir do valor da constante de ionização e então utilizada para determinação da força iônica. Se o ácido for muito fraco e permanecer principalmente não ionizado, sua contribuição para a força iônica total da solução é insignificante.

Ionic Strength: Overview

Ionic strength describes the total electrolyte concentration in a solution. It is a quantitative measure of how many ions are present and how strongly they contribute to the solution. The concept was introduced in 1921 by Gilbert N. Lewis and Merle Randall while they were describing the activity coefficient of strong electrolytes.

To calculate ionic strength, written as I or μ, both cations and anions are included. The concentration of each ion matters, but the charge number z matters even more because it is squared in the calculation. That means ions with a higher charge contribute more to the total ionic strength than ions with a lower charge at the same concentration.

When a salt produces more than one of the same ion after dissolving, each ion must be counted. For example, 0.1 mol/L Na2SO4 gives a sodium ion concentration of 0.2 mol/L because each formula unit forms two Na+ ions in solution. This makes the sodium contribution part of the final ionic strength value.

Ionic strength is easier to calculate for dilute solutions. In more concentrated solutions, the calculation becomes less exact because salts do not dissociate completely. For instance, in 0.025 mol/L MgSO4(aq), about 25% to 35% of the salt can remain as the ion pair MgSO4(aq).

The idea also applies to strong and weak acids. Strong acids dissociate completely in solution, so their ionic strength can be calculated in the same way as fully dissociated salts. Weak acids require the concentration of ionized species, which can be found from the ionization constant and then used for ionic strength. If an acid is very weak and stays mostly non-ionized, its contribution to the total ionic strength is negligible.
