Target Cell Response to Hormones

Os hormônios se ligam a receptores na superfície ou no interior de uma célula-alvo e iniciam várias respostas celulares. 
Uma maneira pela qual as células regulam esses efeitos é alterando a quantidade do receptor expresso na célula.
Altos níveis hormonais podem levar a um declínio gradual no número de receptores de um determinado hormônio nas células - um processo chamado regulação negativa.
Em contraste, quando os níveis hormonais estão baixos, as células podem produzir mais de um determinado receptor para aumentar a sensibilidade celular por meio da regulação positiva.
Os hormônios também podem interagir com outros tipos de hormônios para criar diversas respostas celulares.
Alguns hormônios são permissivos, onde a presença de um hormônio permite que outro exerça seus efeitos. Por exemplo, a epinefrina precisa de hormônios tireoidianos para estimular a lipólise de forma eficaz nas células-alvo.
Outros, como o hormônio folículo-estimulante e a testosterona, atuam sinergicamente para produzir uma resposta amplificada, neste caso, a produção normal de espermatozoides.

Notavelmente, a resposta celular pode ser regulada alterando o número de receptores expressos na célula. Por outro lado, em resposta a baixos níveis hormonais, as células podem utilizar a regulação positiva, produzindo uma quantidade aumentada de um receptor específico para aumentar a sensibilidade celular.

A interação entre os hormônios pode levar a diversas respostas celulares. Certos hormônios exibem interações permissivas, onde a presença de um hormônio permite que outro exerça seus efeitos sinergicamente. Um exemplo é a colaboração entre a epinefrina e os hormônios da tireoide, onde os hormônios da tireoide facilitam a estimulação eficaz da lipólise pela epinefrina nas células-alvo. Hormones trigger cell responses by binding to receptors on the cell surface or inside the target cell. This binding starts a chain of events that changes how the cell behaves. The response depends on the hormone, the receptor, and the type of target cell.

Cells can also change how strongly they respond by adjusting receptor numbers. When a cell is exposed to high hormone levels for a long time, it may down-regulate receptors. Down-regulation means the cell makes fewer receptors for that hormone on its surface. When hormone levels are low, cells may up-regulate receptors instead. Up-regulation means the cell makes more receptors so it becomes more sensitive.

Hormones can also work together in different ways. In a permissive interaction, one hormone must be present so another hormone can work well. Thyroid hormones help epinephrine stimulate lipolysis, which is the breakdown of fat, in target cells. In a synergistic response, two hormones act together and create a larger effect. Follicle-stimulating hormone and testosterone do this during normal sperm production.

Some hormones have antagonistic effects, which means they act in opposite ways. Insulin lowers blood glucose, while glucagon raises it. These hormone interactions show how the body fine-tunes cell activity and keeps physiological processes in balance.

The central nervous system is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system includes the remaining nervous tissue. A neuron consists of dendrites, a cell body and an axon. Neurons conduct electrical impulses along their membranes and at synapses. Brain cells can detect and sometimes respond to these impulses. Neuroglial cells help to support neural function. The brain consists of three major parts: the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. The cerebrum is divided into lobes and hemispheres. Functions of the cerebrum that may be explored include voluntary muscle control, memory, sensory perception, emotions and speech. The cerebellum is primarily responsible for balance and coordination. The brainstem, a part of the autonomic nervous system, includes structural divisions that perform basic life functions such as breathing and heart rate. The spinal cord is a continuation of the brainstem. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerve tracts that transmits nerve signals between the brain and the body through electrical impulses. Nerves are bundles of neurons that transmit impulses between the peripheral and central nervous systems. The study of nerves can include sciatic, cranial and spinal nerves. Supporting structures of the central nervous system include the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid which protect the central nervous system. Processes of the nervous system are action potential propagation, simple nerve pathways (reflex arc) and neurotransmitter function. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, the effects of drugs, mental illnesses, spinal injuries, concussions, meningitis and multiple sclerosis (MS). Investigations are used to understand and explain the nervous system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
