Considere um circuito que consiste em dois resistores, um indutor e duas fontes senoidais independentes com frequências diferentes. O teorema da superposição pode ser usado para determinar a queda de tensão no resistor.
De acordo com o teorema da superposição, a saída total de um circuito linear com múltiplas entradas é igual à soma das saídas individuais de cada entrada operando independentemente.
Assim, o circuito pode ser dividido em vários circuitos, cada um com uma única entrada senoidal. 
Como a impedância depende da frequência, existem diferentes circuitos no domínio da frequência para cada frequência.
A regra de divisão de tensão e a lei de Ohm são aplicadas para determinar a tensão de saída de cada circuito.
As tensões obtidas são então expressas no domínio do tempo.
A tensão total de saída é a soma das tensões produzidas por cada fonte individualmente.
Quando essa queda de tensão é plotada graficamente, ela resulta em uma saída não senoidal, mesmo que todas as entradas sejam senoidais.

Considere encontrar um circuito em estado estacionário onde todas as suas entradas são senoidais, mas nem todas possuem a mesma frequência. O princípio da superposição estipula que a saída de um circuito linear com diversas entradas simultâneas é equivalente às saídas cumulativas quando cada entrada opera de forma independente. As entradas do circuito são as tensões das fontes de tensão independentes e as correntes das fontes de corrente independentes.

Quando todas as entradas, exceto uma, são definidas como zero, as entradas restantes se tornam fontes de tensão 0-V e fontes de corrente 0-A. Dado que fontes de tensão 0-V equivalem a curtos-circuitos e fontes de corrente 0-A correspondem a circuitos abertos, as fontes ligadas às demais entradas são substituídas por circuitos abertos ou em curto-circuito. O que resta é um circuito em estado estacionário com uma única entrada senoidal, que se qualifica como um circuito AC e é analisado usando fasores e impedâncias.

Conseqüentemente, o princípio da superposição é empregado para transformar um circuito com múltiplas entradas senoidais em frequências variadas em vários circuitos separados, cada um com uma entrada senoidal singular. Cada um desses circuitos AC é então analisado usando fasores e impedâncias para determinar sua saída senoidal. O agregado destas saídas senoidais coincidirá com a saída do circuito inicial.

Analyzing mixed-frequency linear circuits starts with the principle of superposition. In a linear circuit, the total output from several inputs is the sum of the outputs from each input acting alone. Here, the inputs are the voltages from independent voltage sources and the currents from independent current sources.

When one source is kept active, every other independent source is set to zero. A 0-V voltage source becomes a short circuit, and a 0-A current source becomes an open circuit. This leaves a steady-state circuit with only one sinusoidal input.

That single-input circuit can then be treated as an AC circuit. It is analyzed with phasors, which represent sinusoidal signals, and impedances, which describe how circuit parts oppose current in AC. The same process is repeated for each source in the original circuit.

The final result is found by adding the separate sinusoidal outputs together. This sum matches the output of the full circuit with multiple sinusoidal inputs at different frequencies. In this way, superposition turns one mixed-input circuit into several simpler AC circuits.
