As cianobactérias são bactérias fototróficas oxigenadas difundidas encontradas em ecossistemas aquáticos e terrestres. Com base na morfologia, eles são divididos em Chroococcales, Pleurocapsales, Oscillatoriales, Nostocales e Stigonematales. Chroococcales, como Gloeothece, são unicelulares e se dividem por fissão binária. Pleurocapsales como Pleurocapsa também são unicelulares, mas se dividem por fissão múltipla, formando colônias. Cyanobacteria are oxygenic, phototrophic bacteria that helped change Earth&amp;#8217;s atmosphere from low in oxygen to oxygen-rich billions of years ago. They are also very diverse in shape and size. Some are unicellular, while others grow as filaments. Cell size can range from 0.5 µm to 100 µm.

Scientists group cyanobacteria into five major types. Chroococcales are unicellular and divide by binary fission. Pleurocapsales are also unicellular, but they divide by multiple fission. Oscillatoriales are filamentous and do not form heterocysts. Nostocales are filamentous and show cell differentiation. Stigonematales are filamentous and have branching. Prochlorophytes were once treated as separate, but they are now included in Chroococcales.

Cyanobacteria carry out oxygenic photosynthesis using FeS-type and Q-type photosystems. They fix carbon dioxide through the Calvin cycle, and many species also fix nitrogen. They store energy as glycogen and can use simple organic compounds such as glucose and acetate. In sulfide-rich conditions, some species can switch to anoxygenic photosynthesis.

Their photosynthetic system is found in thylakoid membranes. These membranes contain chlorophyll a and phycobilins, which give cyanobacteria their blue-green color. Prochlorophytes are different because they make chlorophylls a and b and do not have phycobilins.

Many cyanobacteria move by gliding, often toward light. Synechococcus shows a different swimming method. Gas vesicles help these organisms control buoyancy so they can reach the best light levels. They also make mucilaginous sheaths, hormogonia, akinetes, and cyanophycin.

Heterocysts are special nitrogen-fixing cells found in some filamentous cyanobacteria. They create an oxygen-free space for nitrogenase to work and exchange nutrients with vegetative cells. Cyanobacteria are especially important in oceans, where groups such as Synechococcus, Prochlorococcus, and Trichodesmium are abundant. They also live in hot springs and deserts, form blooms in nutrient-rich freshwater, produce neurotoxins, and can cause earthy odors in water supplies.

Amoebozoa are a diverse group of terrestrial and aquatic protists. They move and feed with lobe-shaped pseudopodia. This feature sets them apart from Rhizaria, which have threadlike pseudopodia.
